Simon Crafar to Succeed Freddie Spencer as FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel Chairman in 2025
Simon Crafar will succeed Freddie Spencer as the head of the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel.
Simon Crafar has been officially appointed as the upcoming Chairman of the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel.
Simon Crafar, known for his victory in the 500cc Grand Prix and his extensive experience as a pit reporter for the MotoGP International Programme Feed, is set to assume a new position starting in 2025.
The New Zealander is set to succeed Freddie Spencer, as the MotoGP Legend has decided to leave his role at the end of the 2024 season.
Spencer took on the role of Chairman of the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel when the position was established in 2019.
The teams’ association (IRTA) selects the panel's Chairman, whose selection is subsequently ratified by the Permanent Bureau.
In addition to the Chairman, the panel includes two other Stewards who are proposed by the FIM and given the green light by the Permanent Bureau.
Crafar will collaborate with the existing FIM MotoGP Stewards, Andrés Somolinos and Tamara Matko.
Spencer expressed that it had been a privilege to serve as the panel's inaugural Chairman and to contribute to establishing the remarkable team and processes currently in place.
"When I was offered the position of Chairman, I agreed because I wanted to support the sport, and I am proud of what I accomplished during my time in the role."
"I'm excited about upcoming projects, and I'm confident Simon will lead the team well."
Crafar expressed his excitement about embracing this new opportunity.
I carefully considered my decision to make this shift and accept the new position, knowing it would mean stepping away from a role I have greatly enjoyed. However, after seven years of providing commentary for MotoGP, I feel prepared for a new challenge.
"I plan to tackle this new role by drawing on my background as a rider, technician, coach, and journalist. More significantly, I will bring my passion for the sport and my admiration for its athletes."
"It is a privilege to be given this responsibility and to receive the nomination for this position."
