Simon Crafar has been named the new Chairman of the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel
Simon Crafar has been officially announced as the forthcoming Chairman of the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel.
Crafar, who has previously won a 500cc Grand Prix and served as a pit reporter for the MotoGP International Programme Feed for many years, will assume his new position starting in 2025.
The individual from New Zealand is set to replace Freddie Spencer, who has chosen to vacate his role at the end of the 2023 season, as the MotoGP Legend.
Spencer took on the role of Chairman for the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel in 2019, marking the inception of the position as an independent duty.
The panel's Chairman is selected by the association of teams (IRTA) and subsequently receives approval from the Permanent Bureau for their appointment.
In addition to the Chairman, the committee is rounded out with two Stewards, each selected by the FIM and given the green light by the Permanent Bureau.
Crafar is set to collaborate with the existing FIM MotoGP Stewards, Andrés Somolinos and Tamara Matko.
Spencer mentioned, "I've had the honor of being the initial Chair of the committee, and it was a rewarding experience to establish the outstanding team and protocols we currently have."
Upon being offered the position of Chairman, I agreed to take on the role with the intention of making a positive impact on the sport, and I look back on my time in this position with pride.
"I'm eager to see the upcoming projects, and I'm confident that Simon will lead the team exceptionally well."
Crafar expressed his excitement about embracing this upcoming opportunity.
The choice to embrace this new opportunity and step into this role wasn't made easily, especially since it entails departing from a position that has brought me much joy. However, after dedicating seven years to MotoGP commentary, I feel prepared to venture into something different.
I plan to tackle my new role by leveraging my expertise gained through roles as a cyclist, mechanic, mentor, and writer, while prioritizing my passion for the sport and admiration for its participants.
"I am privileged to be entrusted with this duty and to have been considered for the position."
