Enea Bastianini chased down Jorge Martin to clinch victory at the 2024 British MotoGP held at Silverstone, though the Pramac team's rider managed to regain the championship lead from Francesco Bagnaia.
Bastianini secured a double win at Silverstone, following up his Sprint triumph by overtaking Martin, who veered off course with two laps remaining.
After Bagnaia's speed diminished, resulting in a third-place finish, Martin, who started the race only a point behind the defending world champion due to Pecco's tumble in the Sprint, has reclaimed the lead in the standings.
Chilly conditions complicated the selection of tires, further compounded by occasional raindrops on the starting line.
Every competitor opted for the safer choice of medium rear and front tires, with the exception of Aprilia riders Aleix Espargaro and Raul Fernandez, who selected the hard front option.
Fernandez found himself at a disadvantage right from the first lap following a mishap involving his Trackhouse team colleague, Miguel Oliveira.
Espargaro, who secured the pole position, initially fell behind the Ducati GP24 riders but managed to recover and overtook Bastianini to regain third place in the initial laps.
The race formation solidified at the front, with Bagnaia, Martin, and Espargaro at the helm of a quintet that also included Bastianini and Marc Marquez.
As Espargaro started to lose momentum, Bastianini took back the third position, however, he was 1.2 seconds behind Martin and Bagnaia.
Martin surged ahead, overtaking Bagnaia at the third turn, and as the last 8 laps commenced, Martin, Bagnaia, and Bastianini were racing closely together.
Bagnaia showed to be the least strong, ultimately letting Bastianini take the lead by veering off track.
Bastianini had seven laps remaining to close a 0.8-second distance to Martin, which he quickly eliminated to intensify the competition with Martin.
In a race that lacked major incidents, Marc Marquez managed to overtake Espargaro for the fourth spot towards the end, nearly closing the gap on Bagnaia.
Alex Marquez and VR46 team member Fabio di Giannantonio fiercely competed for the sixth position, just before the midway point of the race. Eventually, Di Giannantonio signaled Marquez by patting the back of his seat, suggesting that Marquez should trail behind him.
In the final laps, di Giannantonio overtook Espargaro to secure the fifth position.
Espargaro embarked on his 329th Grand Prix race, positioning him as the third highest in historical standings, trailing behind Valentino Rossi with 432 starts and Andrea Dovizioso who has 346.
Franco Morbidelli was penalized with two long lap penalties for causing Marco Bezzecchi to crash at the beginning of the Saturday Sprint race.
Despite nursing an injured right foot, Bezzecchi managed to secure the eighth position.
Brad Binder, who was leading the warm-up, experienced a sudden decrease in speed just off the grid, narrowly avoiding collision with the bikes behind him before having to withdraw his RC16. The updated regulations on tyre pressure for the year 2024 necessitate that competitors maintain a minimum front tyre pressure of 1.8 bar, reduced from 1.88 bar, for at least 60% of a Grand Prix race distance, an increase from the previous requirement of 50%, or for 30% of a Sprint race distance.
If a competitor does not reach the required minimum in a Grand Prix, they will face a penalty of 16 seconds added to their post-race time. For a Sprint or shorter race, the penalty will be reduced to 8 seconds.
Luca Marini is being scrutinized for having insufficient tire pressure in the race today.
For the 75th anniversary of motorcycle grand prix racing, all the bikes and their riders sported a unique vintage design.
MotoGP took place as the day's second grand prix event, shifting Moto2 to the last slot on Sunday's agenda to maintain the traditional broadcasting slot for races held in Europe.
The MotoGP event in Austria at the Red Bull Ring is scheduled for August 16th to 18th.
