Luca Marini’s Point Loss to Tyre Penalty Adds to Honda’s Challenges Despite Optimism for Improvement
Luca Marini failed to secure a crucial point after being penalized for tyre pressure violations following the race. Currently placed 23rd in the MotoGP rankings, Marini remains optimistic about Honda's enhancements.
Luca Marini was unable to earn a point at the British MotoGP because he received a penalty for tyre pressure issues after the race.
The rider from Repsol Honda finished 15th, securing just his second point of the year.
He was relegated to 17th place, earning no points, due to not adhering to the required tyre pressure standards.
Joan Mir, racing for the team, was unable to complete the Silverstone race, whereas Johann Zarco of LCR Honda secured the 14th position and Takaaki Nakagami came in 15th.
Before receiving his penalty, Marini spoke to several media outlets, including Crash.net, discussing the challenges he encountered with his Honda, noting, "The issue arises in the initial laps.
"During the initial lap, we maintained a distance, roughly around half-a-second per lap, from a competitive group."
"During the initial lap, we're clocking in at second place. It's crucial for us to grasp the method by which we get the back tire to function properly as the race kicks off."
Initially, I found myself solitary, with no one ahead.
"It felt odd because I encountered significant issues with vibrations during the race. Over the course of this extended race, the problem intensified, far beyond what I experienced yesterday."
"I had to reduce my speed as I was nearly colliding at each turn. There were significant tremors – this issue requires further examination."
"Occasionally, this issue can arise with our bike; it has occurred to other riders of Honda as well."
"It's crucial for us to grasp the methods of preventing it."
Nonetheless, Marini is of the opinion that Honda is identifying answers to their enduring issues.
"Now, during the qualifying rounds, we manage to perform well with a soft tire," he explained. "However, when using a hard compound, we face difficulties.
"I was inclined towards using a hard front and a soft rear for racing. However, observing that everyone was going with medium for both, I decided to align with the majority to ensure that the data could be followed. This approach is more beneficial for the manufacturer in terms of gathering feedback."
Marini's engine specifications vary compared to those of other Honda riders.
"Mir, ours are identical. Zarco, ours vary," he clarified.
"Zarco's motor offers greater power, higher horsepower, and increased velocity on straightaways. However, it's challenging to handle and not to my liking."
"In my view, this path does not lead to the proper advancement of bicycles going forward."
"Currently, my engine causes us to lag by two tenths on the straightaways, but this is the direction we need to go for future advancements. It's the path to unlocking greater speed."
Marini has managed to secure just a single point throughout the season, following 10 rounds. He finds himself at the very end of the leaderboard, ranked 23rd, even trailing behind Dani Pedrosa, who participated in only one round as a wildcard entry.
However, Marini has identified some positive aspects.
"We've made significant progress. Perhaps the outcomes haven't changed," he remarked.
"However, mounting the bike is a significant milestone. The sensation got better."
"The issue is that all parties have advanced. There's a significant push from everyone involved."
