Sergio Perez Contemplates Retirement but Chooses to Fight On in F1: A Glimpse into His Determined Journey
Sergio Perez considered quitting, yet decided against throwing in the towel. "Opting out would be the simpler choice, following so many years of effort."
Sergio Perez dismissed any ideas of retirement following a challenging season.
Throughout the entire season, the driver from Red Bull has faced intense examination, with his position on the team always in jeopardy.
He came under scrutiny for his showing in the RB20 until the vehicle's constraints were more apparent as Max Verstappen began to encounter difficulties as well.
Perez shared with DAZN his thoughts on leaving Formula 1, stating, "I've pondered this for the last six months, yet the decision itself was made in a mere three seconds."
Ultimately, after years of struggle, choosing to depart and essentially surrender would be the simpler option.
"I could never have excused my own actions."
Red Bull chose to continue with Perez in his racing position during the middle of the season, a decision that was not afforded to Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo.
With Liam Lawson joining Red Bull, there's now a new candidate in the mix to take over Perez's spot in the main squad by 2025.
Perez asserts his desire not to be pushed out.
"I aim to conclude my professional journey on my own terms, rather than at the behest of others," he stated.
"My primary goal is to reach a stage where I have the autonomy to determine my own destiny."
Currently, I'm highly driven and, honestly, I'm eager to keep competing in F1. It's something I take pleasure in.
"Particularly the joyful times are greatly cherished, yet you also come to appreciate the difficult ones."
Currently, my contract extends for another two years, and in the realm of Formula 1, that's quite a significant period. However, I'm aware that my time in the sport is gradually coming to an end.
"I can't envision myself competing here the way Fernando Alonso does, someone I greatly respect for all he achieves at his age.
"I'm not opposed to the idea, it's just that with young kids at home, I'm looking to devote more time to them. Ultimately, they are my priority."
At 34 years old, Perez is under contract for the upcoming season, but he needs to perform exceptionally well at the United States Grand Prix to deter any potential challenges to his position.
