Senedd Member Censured for Misleading Social Media Posts on 20mph Speed Limit
A committee has determined that a member of the Senedd violated the code of conduct due to her social media posts about the 20mph speed limit. Shadow transport minister Natasha Asghar has stood by her description of the speed limit as a "blanket" policy across Wales, despite previously conceding that the term was inaccurate.

A Senedd member was found by the standards committee to have violated the code of conduct through posts on social media concerning the 20mph speed limit.
Lee Waters, previously the deputy minister for climate change in the Welsh government, expressed his dissatisfaction with shadow minister Natasha Asghar's characterization of the default speed limit as a "blanket."
On September 17 of the previous year, the standard speed limit on residential streets in Wales was lowered from 30mph to 20mph.
The policy faced substantial resistance, evidenced by an unprecedented petition on the website of the Senedd, the Welsh parliament.
This led the Welsh government to conduct an evaluation and update the instructions given to local authorities.
Ms. Asghar disagreed that her remarks violated the code of conduct.
The committee's document reflects her view that her use of the general label was intended as an expression of opinion.

The panel pointed out that Ms. Asghar had previously participated in reviewing a comparable grievance concerning Welsh Conservative leader Andrew RT Davies earlier in the year.
At that point, the panel absolved Mr. Davies but determined that the "blanket" term used for the standard limit was vague and incorrect.
The committee concurred with Ms. Asghar's initial acceptance of the report but noted that she soon behaved in opposition to its findings. They aligned with the Senedd’s standards commissioner in determining that her actions had tarnished the reputation of the Senedd.

The committee responsible for upholding conduct standards in the Senedd has decided to formally reprimand Ms. Asghar for her remarks.
A censure serves as a formal expression of dissatisfaction by the Senedd towards a member's conduct, though it does not extend to a temporary suspension.
