Background and Future Steps:
First awarded in 1988 to Nelson Mandela and Anatoli Marchenko, the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought is the EU's highest recognition for human rights work. The prize honors individuals, groups, and organizations who have significantly advanced freedom of thought, particularly in areas such as freedom of expression, minority rights, international law, democracy, and the rule of law. In 2023, the award went to Jina Mahsa Amini and the Woman, Life, Freedom Movement in Iran.
On September 19, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and political groups nominated their candidates for the Sakharov Prize. Each nominee needs the endorsement of at least one political group or 40 MEPs, and individual members can support only one nominee.
A shortlist of three candidates will be selected through a vote by the Foreign Affairs and Development committees on October 17. The final recipient or recipients will be chosen by the Conference of Presidents, a European Parliament body chaired by the president and comprising leaders from all political groups in the Parliament, ensuring a choice that reflects a broad European consensus. This year, the Conference of Presidents will make its decision on October 24. The award ceremony is scheduled for December 18 during a plenary session in Strasbourg.
