Rosberg Criticizes Unceremonious Singapore Farewell for Ricciardo: ‘He Deserves Better
Nico Rosberg believes that Daniel Ricciardo merited a more fitting farewell from Formula 1 than the one he experienced at the Singapore Grand Prix.
Nico Rosberg thinks that Daniel Ricciardo should have a more fitting farewell in Formula 1 than the one he received at the Singapore Grand Prix.
At 35 years old, the Australian racer completed the Singapore Grand Prix in 18th place and recorded the fastest lap, likely marking the end of his Formula 1 career that began in 2011.
It is highly anticipated that reserve driver Liam Lawson will take Daniel Ricciardo's spot on Red Bull's RB team before the United States Grand Prix in Austin.
Red Bull's team principal, Laurent Mekies, revealed that they allowed Ricciardo the opportunity to set the fastest lap, considering that the Singapore race could potentially be Daniel's final one.
After the race, Ricciardo was honored with a guard of honor by the RB team staff. However, there has been no official announcement confirming that the Singapore race will be his final appearance in F1.
2016 world champion Rosberg stated on the Sky Sports F1 podcast that he should receive a proper farewell if last weekend was indeed his final one.
"It's a bit uncertain because we don't have all the information. We're not even sure if it will take place, which is quite unpleasant. He definitely deserves more clarity and respect."
Rosberg made headlines when he abruptly announced his retirement from Formula 1 only days after securing his first world championship title by defeating Lewis Hamilton in 2016.
The German, who retired from the sport at just 31 years old, stated that he wanted to control his own fate and was eager to steer clear of any possible downturn in his performance.
"Yes, that would have certainly influenced my decision, as I would have been keen to avoid falling further in the ranks until eventually getting dismissed," he remarked.
“As you age and life moves forward, eventually, the moment will arrive when the younger generation steps up, and you will be succeeded.”
"That's definitely a situation I would have preferred to steer clear of. I likely still had time since I was young, but regardless, it was crucial for me to maintain control over it."
"Take a look at that, Daniel. That’s not a fitting conclusion. The same goes for Sebastian Vettel; the way his career wrapped up wasn’t deserving either. That final moment is something I’ll remember for the rest of my life."
"It was crucial and significant for me to make the right choice. Looking back, I realize it was disappointing for many at the time since everyone was thrilled by the competition with Lewis [Hamilton]. However, for both me and my family, it was indeed the correct decision."
