Rosberg Calls for Penalty on Verstappen After Dramatic Hungary GP Collision with Hamilton
"Nico Rosberg emphasizes that Max Verstappen should have been penalized, saying, 'He needs to be aware of the turn' – Rosberg gives his opinion on the intense clash between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton in Hungary."
Nico Rosberg firmly believes that Max Verstappen should have been penalized for his crash with Lewis Hamilton during the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix.
Verstappen and Hamilton had a clash at the first corner with just eight laps remaining in Sunday's race at the Hungaroring, as the Red Bull racer attempted to overtake his former F1 championship competitor for the third-place position.
However, Verstappen braked too hard and went off track, causing his left-rear tire to clip Hamilton's front-right, which launched him into the air.
The driver from the Netherlands fell to fifth place following the incident and implied that Hamilton was at fault. However, neither racer faced any sanctions after an inquiry by the stewards.
"Rosberg mentioned on Sky Sports, before the decision of the stewards was made public, that he believes Max probably hasn't watched it on television yet."
"In that case, it's essential to inform him about the turn, the reason Lewis was steering into it! Lewis was navigating the corner. I'm quite convinced he will receive a penalty, possibly 5 or 10 seconds, which will result in him falling behind Sainz."
Examining the crash, former Formula One racer Anthony Davidson questioned: “What caused the wheels to lock, and who bears responsibility for the crash?
As they make their way down the straight stretch, Verstappen trails behind Lewis while they both maneuver past the Williams car. Lewis then veers back toward the standard racing trajectory, as anticipated.
"Subsequently, it appears that Lewis adopts a somewhat superficial strategy when approaching the corner. In my view, there's a marginally premature maneuver into the turn, which somewhat surprises Max."
"[Max] is aiming for the opening, believing it will remain clear. Lewis makes his move. Eventually, you must navigate the turn. It's this ambiguous zone that all the drivers maneuver through.
Max accomplished it in Austria. Lewis was in the process of doing it here. Your actions are causing discomfort for the driver attempting to pass you.
They venture onto the loose debris, making it quite difficult to decelerate at this juncture. There's an ample amount of space, significantly exceeding the width of a car, to the right side.
"Therefore, it's possible to take the inside line. However, due to the high speed you're maintaining, there's a good chance you'll end up locking the brakes."
"That's the scenario. It wasn't a single wheel that seized. Both of the front wheels did. This resulted in the car continuing in a straight path. And it's this inability to steer that led to the crash."
Lewis attempts to make a turn, but as Max's vehicle locks up, it appears to veer left. However, this isn't actually happening; it's a trick of the eye. Experiencing a lock-up on both front wheels results in a loss of steering control. This is the precise issue that tripped up Lewis.
This explains why he didn't veer away from the corner. It's because one wouldn't anticipate the vehicle on the inside to abruptly continue in a straight line, as it happened.
Observing the extent of the lock-up and the car's trajectory veering off course, it appears to be a typical racing event. The primary reason for the crash can be attributed to Max's actions. However, his approach into the corner was somewhat hindered.
"The boundaries are unclear. It's one thing to feint your opponent into moving aside for an overtaking maneuver, and then you respond to it. That's not the same as a slight steering adjustment. However, both actions occur in the braking zone, as does the approach to the corner."
