Am Dienstag wählten die Abgeordneten Roberta Metsola (EVP, Malta) im ersten Wahlgang mit 562 Stimmen zur Präsidentin des Europäischen Parlaments, ein Amt, das sie nun bis 2027 innehaben wird.

Roberta Metsola sicherte sich den Sieg im ersten Wahlgang, indem sie in einer geheimen Abstimmung mit Stimmzetteln 562 von 699 abgegebenen Stimmen erhielt, was einer absoluten Mehrheit entspricht. Sie wird das Parlament in den ersten zweieinhalb Jahren der 10. Legislaturperiode weiterhin leiten.

Who is Roberta Mets

Roberta Metsola, born in Malta in 1979, has been serving as a member of the European Parliament since 2013. She was elected First Vice-President in November 2020 and stepped in as acting President following the death of President David Sassoli on January 11, 2022. On January 18, 2022, Metsola was officially elected President for the latter half of the 9th parliamentary term. She is the third woman to hold this position, following Simone Veil (1979-1982) and Nicole Fontaine (1999-2002).

Ich möchte, dass die Menschen wieder Vertrauen und Begeisterung für unser Projekt entwickeln. Vertrauen darauf, dass unser gemeinsamer Raum sicherer, gerechter und fairer wird, mit größerer Gleichheit, und dass wir zusammen stärker und besser sind. Vertrauen darauf, dass unser Europa ein Europa für alle ist.“

Regarding the Role of the Parliament President

The President holds extensive executive and representative powers and is responsible for ensuring adherence to the rules of procedure. Her duties are outlined in Article 22 of the rules of procedure. It states, "The President directs all activities of the Parliament and its bodies in accordance with these rules of procedure and has all the authority needed to preside over parliamentary debates and ensure their proper conduct."
