Rivals Weigh In: Analyzing Jorge Martin’s Critical Crash at German MotoGP
Competitors assess Jorge Martin's crash: 'It might be safer to lose two-tenths', 'Entering that turn is a gamble'
Luca Marini, Jack Miller, and Maverick Vinales were asked to share their thoughts on Jorge Martin's expensive mistake while leading the German MotoGP.
Jorge Martin was at a loss to explain why he crashed on the second-to-last lap while leading the German MotoGP on Sunday. He mentioned that he preferred to review the data calmly before drawing any conclusions. Meanwhile, some of his competitors were asked for their thoughts on the incident.
Luca Marini from Repsol Honda mentioned that he had only watched a television replay of the event, specifically from the helicopter's perspective, which indicated:
According to Motomatters.com, Marini expressed that he believes the driver applied the brakes too late, after passing the white line that serves as the braking marker for Turn 1.
"In my view, he realized he was going a bit too far during the braking, which is why he extended his right leg out, but then he pulled it back."
In my view, he seemed uncertain about whether to steer the bike inward, but he might have thought, 'Alright, I'll give it a shot.'
"Perhaps it's wiser to sacrifice a couple of tenths of a second and take a wider turn rather than risking the lead in the championship."
"It's unfortunate for him, but it benefits Pecco more."
KTM's Jack Miller emphasized the challenging characteristics of the uneven braking area at Turn 1.
Miller described how, just as you're attempting to halt it, the track suddenly falls away at the most crucial moment.
"There are moments when you take a risk by braking later and feel confident, but then you get near the edge and realize the front is going to lose traction."
He mentioned that during the race, there were several instances when he nearly began to stand up. "You face a decision; you either start standing up or you fully commit," he explained.
"At that location, I never feel like I can brake to the fullest extent. There's always a small safety margin, especially with the hill that appears as you start braking and then descends again at the corner's apex."
Aprilia's Maverick Vinales commented on the intense contest between Martin and Francesco Bagnaia, saying, "I believe they were pushing their limits." He noted that the lap times in the final stages of the race were nearly 1 minute and 20 seconds, which is quite fast.
"Corner 1 is quite challenging… In the morning, I managed to brake more effectively, but when I accelerated, I was on the crest. It's crucial to exercise extreme caution here."
Martin's third fall of the racing season caused him to lose his lead in the world championship to Bagnaia.
