Rising Stars Bearman and Colapinto Influence Red Bull’s Bold F1 Driver Strategy Shift
Did the impressive displays by F1 newcomers Ollie Bearman and Franco Colapinto play a role in Red Bull's recent driver changes?
Did the exceptional showing by the sport's novice replacements impact Red Bull's newest lineup alteration?
In discussing the decision to replace Daniel Ricciardo with Liam Lawson for the rest of the 2024 F1 season, Red Bull's team leader, Christian Horner, offered a fascinating analogy.
22-year-old Lawson has been given the opportunity to compete for a seat in the 2025 lineup with Red Bull's affiliate team RB, and possibly even the leading team, during the last six events of the season after taking over from the struggling Ricciardo.
During an appearance on the F1 Nation podcast, Horner discussed Red Bull's approach to decision-making and took the opportunity to commend the efforts of young drivers Oliver Bearman and Franco Colapinto. Both racers have made notable impressions while filling in at Ferrari/Haas and Williams, respectively.
Horner's remarks suggest that the performances of F2's Bearman, set to compete full-time for Haas in the upcoming season, and Colapinto, have influenced Red Bull's decision-making process regarding their driver situation.
"Horner disclosed that there have been several unexpected developments."
It's become increasingly difficult to gauge performance in Formula 2 currently, especially considering how Oliver Bearman, stepping into the Ferrari for a race in Saudi Arabia at one of the circuit's most challenging tracks, appeared as experienced as a seasoned racer.
"Moreover, he recently managed to do the same with a challenging colleague, Nico Hulkenberg."
Colapinto has emerged as an unexpected standout, having previously flown under the radar in F2. He garnered little attention there. However, after stepping into the Williams for just a few races, he has demonstrated remarkable talent. His performance has indeed been extraordinary and notably impressive.
"It's quite challenging to make a definitive statement. Does this suggest that Isack Hadjar, who was outperforming everyone, is a level above? We can't be certain until these individuals are given an opportunity."
Isack Hadjar, a member of the Red Bull junior team, currently holds the runner-up position in the Formula 2 standings, outperforming competitors Colapinto and Bearman. Throughout this season, he has secured four wins, the highest number achieved by any racer in the primary developmental series for Formula 1.
Hadjar has been appointed as Red Bull's designated reserve driver for the 2025 season. However, the 20-year-old from France might still have the opportunity to compete for Red Bull in the upcoming season. This chance could arise if Lawson does not seize his moment or if he performs so exceptionally that Red Bull decides to replace Sergio Perez with him.
"Horner mentioned, 'The newcomers are eager, they come in with a strong appetite, and they push the car to its limits.'"
"What we're observing with the influx of junior racers lately is their readiness, their effective racing strategies, and their adeptness at managing tyre wear."
"Bearman, Colapinto, and their peers have performed exceptionally well."
