Ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend, the officials have announced the new set of rules and guidelines for the 2026 F1 season.

The FIA has formally announced the updated regulations for the 2026 Formula 1 season.

Focused on enhancing the agility of the vehicles, the upcoming technical rules aim to boost the competitiveness and facilitate tighter racing contests.

The upcoming models of vehicles will have a weight reduction of 30 kilograms compared to the older versions and will operate entirely on renewable fuels.

Efforts to decrease the weight of the vehicles involve shortening the wheelbase from 3600mm to 3400mm and narrowing the cars from a width of 2000mm to 1900mm.

The tyre widths have been modified, with the front tyres being narrowed by 25mm and the rear tyres by 30mm.

In summary, the modifications to the regulations will lead to a 30 per cent decrease in the cars' total downforce and a 55 per cent reduction in drag.

Ideally, this would enable vehicles to trail closely behind one another, facilitating improved competition on the race track.

Additional modifications encompass a revamped power system featuring a roughly 300% increase in battery capacity for both internal combustion and electric propulsion, while active aerodynamics are reintroduced to accommodate the energy needs of the updated power units.

The FIA has announced the introduction of a "manual override mode" that will enhance overtaking chances by allowing increased electrical power usage when trailing behind another competitor.

Significant progress has been achieved in enhancing safety via the development of more robust vehicle frames and the implementation of stricter testing protocols.

Discussing the updated regulations, Formula 1's Chief Executive Officer, Stefano Domenicali, commented, "This set of rules signifies an important juncture for the progression of our sport, as we anticipate the introduction of a new era of vehicle and engine that strives to deliver more competitive and thrilling races for our audience."

The introduction of the environmentally friendly hybrid engine represents a significant advancement for the worldwide car market. This decrease in fuel consumption could be adopted by vehicles globally, substantially reducing pollution. This potential is a primary factor in the unprecedented increase in engine manufacturers participating in Formula 1 by 2026.
