Remy Gardner Weighs the Pros and Cons of a Dual Role: The Complexities of Balancing MotoGP Testing and World Superbike Racing
Remy Gardner's assessment of potential MotoGP test position as "complicating the situation"
Is Remy Gardner considering a position as a Yamaha test rider?
Remy Gardner suggests that taking on the role of a full-time Yamaha MotoGP test rider in 2025 while also competing in the World Superbike Championship could complicate matters for both involved.
Yamaha enlisted the services of the 2021 Moto2 world champion to fill in for the hurt Alex Rins during last month's race in Germany. Subsequently, he was selected to substitute for Cal Crutchlow, a wildcard entry, at the test team for the British Grand Prix.
Gardner, stepping in for Rins following his persistent injuries, finished at the back in both events at Silverstone.
When queried by journalists from Crash.net and others at Silverstone about the possibility of juggling a MotoGP test rider position for Yamaha with his WSBK commitments, Gardner responded, "I don't believe that's feasible. I don't see both roles being manageable together.
Opting for this route might ultimately be counterproductive, as it results in a bike that is entirely distinct from the original.
Given enough time, I believe I could perform equally well. However, it's an entirely different motorcycle, and switching from one week to the next isn't ideal for concentrating on a single championship.
"In Donington, it took me five laps to get back into my rhythm, and we faced difficulties there."
"I'm uncertain whether it's related, but this weekend in Portimao will be telling. I enjoy the Portimao circuit, so I anticipate performing well there."
"However, it would certainly complicate matters and undoubtedly harm both their own interests and mine. Therefore, I believe the choice must be between one option or the other."
After achieving notable success on the podium with GRT Yamaha in the World Superbike Championship this season, Gardner expresses his ambition to continue competing at a high level rather than focusing on testing.
"I'm still a young man at 26, feeling a strong passion burning inside," he continued.
"Achieved my first top-three finish in almost two years a few weeks back and I'm eager for more.
"I secured a fourth-place finish in Most, which was incredibly disappointing. My appetite for reaching the podium is now stronger than ever."
"I enjoy both racing and competing, and I believe I still have a chance to compete for a championship down the line. Being a racer at heart, it could mean committing to a full season here. Let's wait and see."
For the 2025 MotoGP roster, Yamaha has openings at Pramac, and it appears probable that Miguel Oliveira will fill one of them. Meanwhile, a variety of riders from Moto2 are being considered for the remaining spot.
