Ducati GP23 Enhancements Aim to Strengthen Marquez’s MotoGP Title Chase Amidst GP24 Dominance
Ducati's commitment to enhancing the GP23 could benefit Marc Marquez in the MotoGP championship battle. Despite the introduction of the GP24, Ducati plans to continue upgrades to the GP23.
Gigi Dall’Igna, the general manager of Ducati, has stated that they will make any possible enhancements to the GP23 for the remainder of the 2024 MotoGP season.
This remark follows the British Grand Prix weekend, where Ducati's advancements with their 2024 bike were most noticeable.
In both events held at Silverstone, the GP24s dominated the podium, with Enea Bastianini securing the first position.
In contrast to this point in the 2023 season, when an older Ducati model had already secured two victories, the 2023-version Desmosedici has yet to claim the top spot in any sprint race or grand prix.
Marc Marquez, who finished fourth in the British Grand Prix and is currently 62 points behind the championship leader, observed that the GP24 motorcycle of his competitors is now demonstrating noticeable improvements over the GP23 at specific circuits.
After the British Grand Prix, Dall’Igna spoke to Sky Italy and commended his team for their hard work in enhancing the 2024 bike. He also promised to continue upgrading the GP23 throughout the remainder of the season.
"We consistently strive to address the issues, and I believe we've done a commendable job," he stated.
"We've certainly enhanced the GP24 in the areas where the GP23 had some shortcomings."
"It has been observed here at Silverstone and at other tracks as well. I must commend the factory team for their excellent work."
"Understanding specific mechanisms and issues is always at the core of everything."
“When you grasp specific concepts, it becomes simpler to implement the solutions.
"We will make enhancements to the GP23 wherever possible and will keep doing so throughout the year."
Generally, Marquez has come to terms with his technical circumstances since he started with Ducati, yet he has secured nine podium finishes in both sprints and grands prix during the first 10 rounds of the 2024 season.
Nevertheless, he acknowledged at Silverstone that even when he manages to perfectly adjust his bike's set-up to compete at the front, he is pushing it to the limit.
As the season progresses, we probably won't see any significant improvements with the GP23 compared to the GP24. However, Dall’Igna’s remarks are particularly noteworthy given the current state of the championship race.
At the forefront is Pramac’s Jorge Martin, as Enea Bastianini's two consecutive victories have propelled him past Marquez to third place in the rankings, now only 49 points behind the leader.
Martin and Bastianini are set to depart from Ducati after this season, as Marquez has been chosen for the second spot on the factory team instead of them.
Since Martin joined Aprilia, it has been hard to imagine that Ducati would keep fully backing him and Pramac, allowing him to carry the #1 plate to a competitor.
Bastianini's recent performance indicates he has the potential to match previous successes, which could simplify Ducati's decision-making. This situation might be further influenced by enhancements received by some of the GP23 riders, such as Marquez, potentially allowing them to disrupt the leading GP24 competitors.
