Red Bull’s Horner Facilitates Verstappen-Lambiase Reconciliation Post-Hungarian GP Tensions
Christian Horner discusses a meeting between Max Verstappen and Gianpiero Lambiase to tackle a recent hiccup
"We had a discussion about it on Thursday. I believe it's a minor setback and we're moving past it."
Christian Horner disclosed that he convened with Max Verstappen and race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase for a discussion to resolve any misunderstandings after the F1 Hungarian Grand Prix.
Verstappen expressed his dissatisfaction with his engineer, Lambiase, and the broader Red Bull crew during last weekend's race at the Hungaroring.
The Dutch driver expressed frustration with Red Bull's late call to pit, which resulted in him falling behind Lewis Hamilton.
Lambiase communicated to Verstappen his desire to avoid a "childish" back-and-forth over the team radio after the Red Bull driver's incident at the first turn.
On Thursday at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, the atmosphere was clarified in a session that included Horner.
In a conversation with Sky Sports on Saturday, Horner mentioned, "Max has been part of our team for eight years. His passion is one of the key elements of his personality that contributes to his excellence."
"When he becomes annoyed, he expresses it openly. It's something we've heard repeatedly. I'm confident that if every Premier League player was equipped with a microphone, you'd capture their moments of frustration. The issue currently with the state of the sport is that there's a microphone waiting for him before he enters the car, inside the car, and as soon as he exits the car."
"He was expressing frustrations that might be unpleasant to hear, yet it reflects his deep passion for his work. This intensity peaks and then fades. He and GP have built a strong, lengthy relationship over time, understanding each other thoroughly. We had a meeting about it on Thursday. I view it as a minor hiccup, and we're progressing past it."
Horner humorously remarked that it felt somewhat like therapy and emphasized that the most effective method to resolve any problems is through open discussion.
Horner remarked, “It's akin to a session of therapy. Come Thursday, it's all about getting set for the weekend. The most effective method to tackle a problem is to discuss it thoroughly. Max and GP have had their discussion. They've moved past it and are now concentrating on this week, aiming to head into the summer break in top condition.”
Horner further justified his choice to refrain from stepping in through team communications.
He clarified, "At this juncture, it's utterly pointless. You'll only provoke him. Max is out there, giving it his all, racing with intense passion. Anything you do will only fan the flames.
"Just allow him to express himself fully. He settles down swiftly. Indeed, by the time we arrived at the airport that night, he was completely serene. Each driver has their own way. Oscar, for instance, is silent over the radio, while Max, on the other hand, offers a distinct experience.”
