Racing Stars and Stripes: The Quest for America’s Next F1 Driver Amid Austin’s High-Octane Drama
The popularity of Formula 1 in the United States offers significant opportunities for brands, but there is a noticeable absence of a new American driver on the horizon. An exclusive report from the paddock in Austin by Stewart Bell.
On Sunday, Ferrari captured the spotlight at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin. Charles Leclerc took the victory, closely followed by his teammate Carlos Sainz, marking Ferrari’s first one-two finish at the United States Grand Prix in 18 years.
While Leclerc's commanding performance stood out, it was equally remarkable to witness the hard work and dedication at Ferrari's Maranello headquarters. Here, individuals such as reserve driver Robert Shwartzman toiled in the team's simulator, striving to find solutions until the early hours of Saturday morning, with their efforts continuing until 4:11 am.

In the Austin paddock, temperatures were high. However, during the intense competition for both championships, a significant controversy erupted in Red Bull's pit lane at the start of the weekend. It was revealed that the RB20 car had an undisclosed mechanism capable of altering the height of its front bib.
Unsurprisingly, speculation spread rapidly that the team might employ the device to alter the height of the front bib between the qualifying sessions and the race itself, all while under parc fermé rules, an action that would violate the regulations.
The team effectively dispelled the rumors by showing that any alterations in the garage were neither simple nor discreet. The process involved removing parts and using an extended tool to make adjustments.
"Indeed, it does exist," confirmed a high-ranking representative from Red Bull. "However, it becomes unreachable when the [RB20] vehicle is completely put together and prepared for operation."
"In our extensive communications with the FIA, this issue was discussed, and we've come to an agreement on a future plan."
Red Bull actively engaged in efforts to unsettle their competitors, as Max Verstappen implied that McLaren's Oscar Piastri should not play a supporting role in Lando Norris' championship quest, arguing that Piastri is not merely a secondary driver.
Helmut Marko, the motorsport consultant, suggested that Norris experiences "certain mental vulnerabilities," alluding to his anxiety before races.
This time, McLaren maintained a superior position, even though it faced criticism for unveiling its "mini DRS system" in Singapore.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown commented that bringing up that situation is quite unsuitable and seems to regress progress by a decade or two. He mentioned that while racing can be entertaining and different people employ various strategies from a sporting standpoint, he believed this particular instance was rather distasteful.
Max Verstappen's controversial podium finish stirred the ongoing rivalry further. This result came after Lando Norris received a five-second penalty for overtaking Verstappen off the track at turn 12, just four laps before the race ended.
Putting political matters aside, the racing community was excited about returning to the United States. Aside from the competitive battles on the track, there was a competition to see which team could embrace American culture the most. Alpine emerged as a strong competitor, unveiling a special edition livery that resembled McLaren's, designed to promote the upcoming Indiana Jones video game. Additionally, they organized a cowboy-themed photo session with their drivers at the popular Austin PR spot, Allens Boots.
The Haas team, competing on their home turf, emerged as the expected victor. They showcased a US-themed design on their cars and hosted a media event on the Thursday before the race. At this gathering, they treated attendees to Chipotle's burgers, chips, and guacamole, courtesy of their sponsor.
The reasoning was clear, as the Austin event provided a significant opportunity for teams to engage with their American sponsors. Since the beginning of this season, 46.8 percent of the sport's brands are located in the United States, which is twice the number seen before Liberty Media's involvement.
Certainly, this year saw no American racers participating in the lineup. However, Aston Martin's green team made a significant statement by having their development driver, Jak Crawford, perform a series of demonstration runs with the AMR22 in five different spots throughout his hometown of Houston.
The pre-race event in Houston celebrated two significant milestones: the 50th anniversary of the US headquarters of Aston Martin's partner, Aramco, and the introduction of their collaborative effort called 'Generation 3.' This new initiative is focused on fostering innovation and creating positive social change.
For Crawford, the focus was on realizing his vision of the perfect home.
He expressed his excitement by saying, "I got to start my day waking up in my own bed and later had the chance to drive a Formula One car, which is quite amazing."
Positive developments continued for Crawford, as it was announced that the 19-year-old will participate in the Abu Dhabi postseason test, where he will be behind the wheel of the AMR24.
Sports enthusiasts will soon receive more updates as the event moves to Mexico City for the second part of the initial three-race series. This segment will take place at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez from October 25 to 27.
