Pressure Mounts on Sergio Perez as Red Bull’s Title Hopes Waver: Coulthard Warns of Potential Exit
"Return to the real world" as Sergio Perez is met with an "on his way out" judgment.
"A single success doesn't define a season. One positive outcome is not enough to meet expectations."
David Coulthard is concerned that Sergio Perez might face the same fate as Daniel Ricciardo and be shown the door by Red Bull if he doesn't show rapid improvement.
Perez has managed to earn just a single point over the last two grand prix events, causing Red Bull to slip behind McLaren in the race for the constructors' championship.
An untimely accident in Azerbaijan cost Perez a potential podium finish, and he subsequently delivered a lackluster 10th place performance in Singapore.
David Coulthard, speaking to Channel 4, noted that while his performance in Baku was excellent, one great result doesn't guarantee continued success.
A single positive outcome isn't what you anticipate. It's evident that he is the second-ranked driver within that team.
"After the relief experienced in Baku, the situation returned to normal here."
"If he fails to consistently score points for the rest of the year, he might be heading towards an exit, much like what happened to Daniel Ricciardo."
"The circumstances might be identical for Perez."
Due to Ricciardo's poor performance for Red Bull this season, he will be substituted by Liam Lawson for the rest of the season.
Perez managed to keep his position at the halfway point and gained further support from Red Bull.
However, with McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri consistently performing well in every race, Perez's failure to score points has become a problem for Red Bull in the constructors' championship.
Max Verstappen’s second-place finish in Singapore, trailing Norris, provided some relief for Red Bull.
David Coulthard examined the situation, noting that the team arrived with a strategy designed to address the challenges they faced the previous year, but it ultimately failed.
“They returned to a method that was more within their usual scope of activities.
"Max showcased exceptional talent by delivering a lap that earned them a spot on the front row. The outcome might have been different if Oscar hadn't faced his challenges."
“But the stopwatch tells the truth. The starting lineup was set. Finishing second was the highest position they could aim for.”
