Pramac and MotoGP Stewards Clear Air Over Controversial Misano Finish: No Penalty for Bastianini
Pramac shares results from officials' discussion following contentious Misano event
Gino Borsoi details stewards' decision on the Jorge Martin-Enea Bastianini incident
Gino Borsoi, the team leader of Pramac, disclosed that his team had discussions with MotoGP's officials regarding the contentious final lap at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
Enea Bastianini created quite the sensation as he executed a final lap pass on Jorge Martin for the race lead this Sunday, making his move at Turn 4.
The Ducati team member was ahead but had a minor collision with Martin, causing the front-runner in the championship to veer off the track, while Bastianini also went over the track limits.
Bastianini clinched the victory with a margin of over five seconds, as the officials decided against probing into the incident, leaving Martin quite annoyed, who believed the action was too aggressive.
Additionally, the stewards did not reference the incident in their post-race summary, contributing to the opacity regarding their decision to overlook the action.
Borsoi disclosed that his team had discussions with the race officials, pointing out, "Actually, we communicated with the race direction (the stewards) about it. According to them, the overtaking maneuver was acceptable, not exceeding any boundaries. It is what it is. That's our understanding."
The head of Pramac emphasized that the officials' choice to not look into the incident has now set a clear precedent for what is considered acceptable in racing moving forward.
"Definitely, it's not over the top," he remarked.
"Currently, the situation stands as it is. We're pleased because we achieved a podium finish and managed to extend our lead over Pecco – and we do feel sorry for Pecco's [crash]."
"Regardless, what occurred in the final lap isn't my responsibility; I'm not a member of the race control team."
The decision was made to not impose any penalties on Bastianini, and from this, we gain understanding.
"It's clear that a boundary exists and going forward, if there's a need to undertake such an action on the final lap, it's permissible because it's within the rules."
Views on the incident varied among the participants, with a number considering it a legitimate part of the race, whereas others believed Bastianini ought to have been compelled to return the position.
Marc Marquez believes Bastianini's departure from the track during the overtaking maneuver only solidifies the argument for the Italian to receive a penalty.
