Pedro Acosta recounts the details of a botched negotiation that might have altered his career path
Pedro Acosta disclosed that he had the opportunity to join Valentino Rossi’s VR46 team.
The discussions pertained to 2022, which marked his debut season in Moto2.
Despite Acosta having a positive relationship with Rossi, they were unable to come to an agreement.
"We discussed the possibility of moving to Moto2 with him, MarcVDS, and KTM," Acosta recalled to MOW when he was the Moto3 champion.
“I recall that we were midway through the season, somewhere between the races at Silverstone and Austria.
"I realized my time for learning in Moto3 had ended; out of ten races, I had secured five victories and multiple podium finishes."
However, Acosta described the challenges involved in the negotiation process: "I have a manager, as well as contracts with both Alpinestars and Red Bull."
"Implementing this change proved to be challenging."
"We had discussions, and VR46 presented a promising opportunity, but it posed challenges for the sponsors."
"It was truly delightful to converse with them and realize that they would have welcomed my presence."
Opting to remain with KTM, Acosta secured a fifth-place finish in his debut Moto2 season. He clinched the championship title the following year and is now establishing himself as an exciting newcomer in the top-tier category.
Interestingly, his personal connection with Rossi has lasted.
Acosta has participated in the MotoGP icon's yearly race at his ranch on two occasions.
He mentioned that he participated in the 100km event for two years and admired how Valentino organized everything and interacted with the riders.
"And then you practice, and he approaches to converse with you, posing numerous questions."
“Following my initial MotoGP test, we had extensive discussions about my experience on the bike. He provided me with some insights, particularly regarding the Michelins…"
"It's wonderful to share this kind of relationship with Valentino."
In the upcoming year, Rossi's VR46 team and Acosta are expected to receive upgraded equipment.
The VR46 team is anticipated to gain an advantage from having a factory-spec Ducati, which will probably be ridden by Fabio di Giannantonio.
In the meantime, Acosta will move up from Tech3 to join KTM's main team.
This season, he has amazed spectators by being the only newcomer in MotoGP.
Despite a recent decline in his performance and concerns about KTM's ability to compete, many believe that Acosta will be a strong contender for future championships.
