Pedro Acosta Unveils Behind-The-Scenes Look at Failed VR46 Team Negotiation
Pedro Acosta discloses the reasons behind the collapse of negotiations with VR46's Moto2 squad
Pedro Acosta gives an insight into the unsuccessful discussions that might have altered his career path
Pedro Acosta has disclosed the possibility that he might have inked a deal with Valentino Rossi's VR46 squad.
The discussions took place for the 2022 season, marking his inaugural year in the Moto2
However, even though Acosta and Rossi had a positive relationship, a deal never came to fruition.
"We had a conversation with him, MarcVDS, and KTM regarding a move to Moto2," he recalled to MOW, reflecting on the period when Acosta was the Moto3 champion.
"I recall that we were at the midpoint of the season, transitioning from Silverstone to Austria.
"I realized that my time for learning in Moto3 had come to an end. Out of ten races, I secured victories in five and landed on the podium several times."
Acosta detailed the challenges involved in the negotiation process, highlighting his representation by a manager, along with existing contracts with Alpinestars and Red Bull.
"Making this shift proved to be quite challenging."
"We had discussions and VR46 presented an attractive proposal to us, yet it posed challenges for our sponsors."
"Speaking with them was an incredible experience, knowing that they would have enjoyed having me join them."
Rather than making a change, Acosta remained with KTM and secured a fifth-place finish in his inaugural Moto2 season. Last year, he clinched the championship and is now showcasing his talent as an exciting new competitor in the top tier.
Fascinatingly, his close connection with Rossi has remained intact.
Acosta has participated in the annual race held at the MotoGP legend's ranch on two occasions.
"He mentioned that after participating in the 100km race for two years, he was impressed by Valentino's handling and interaction with the participants who head out for the ride."
"Following your training, he approaches you for a conversation, inquiring about numerous topics."
"After my initial MotoGP trial, we had an extensive discussion about my experience handling the bike, during which he shared some insights with me, such as details on the Michelins, among other topics…
"Having this kind of bond with Valentino is truly wonderful."
In the coming year, Rossi's VR46 squad and Acosta are poised for an upgrade in equipment.
It is anticipated that VR46 will gain advantages from utilizing a factory-spec Ducati, which is expected to be ridden by Fabio di Giannantonio.
Acosta, on the other hand, is set to ascend from Tech3 to a premier position within KTM’s official racing team.
This season, he's amazed spectators as the only newcomer in MotoGP.
Despite experiencing a decline in performance in the latest races, raising concerns about the competitiveness of the KTM, there's little doubt that Acosta is expected to contend for championships going forward.
