Parliament Unveils New Committee Line-Up for Tenth Legislature: A Comprehensive Guide

Parliament has disclosed the list of members assigned to its various committees and subcommittees for the tenth legislative session during a plenary session on Friday.

After the plenary session on Wednesday determined the composition and size of Parliament's standing committees and subcommittees, the political groups and independent members selected the MEPs who will serve on each of these committees.

Guidelines for forming committees

As outlined in the Rules of Procedure for Parliament, the makeup of its committees and subcommittees should aim to mirror the overall makeup of Parliament. This is specified in Rules 216 and 218.

Inaugural meetings of committees

All committees are scheduled to convene their initial meetings on Tuesday, July 23, during which they will select their Chairs and Vice-Chairs.

Context

The duties assigned to each committee are detailed in Annex VI of the Rules of Procedure. In the last legislative term, Parliament endorsed structural changes to create a more modern and efficient system, altering how committees and delegations perform their roles.

Committees typically convene in open sessions unless specified otherwise by regulations. Their primary tasks include drafting, modifying, and voting on legislative proposals and self-initiated reports. They also engage in discussions with Council and Commission representatives, conduct hearings with outside experts, and arrange investigative missions. These committees will be vital in the forthcoming hearings for Commissioners-designate. Parliament has the authority to establish sub-committees and special temporary committees for particular matters and can also form inquiry committees to probe into suspected mismanagement of EU laws. The work of these committees is coordinated by the Conference of Committee Chairs.
