Paris Motor Show (2024): The Need for a Car Exhibition

There's no shortage of innovations, but underlying it all is a sense of uncertainty.

Is the era of car shows over? Absolutely not! Paris is set to sparkle once again, with its lights shining bright from today until October 20th. With 48 car brands, numerous global debuts, and a packed schedule of conferences reminiscent of past glory – albeit on a smaller scale, 1:5 to be precise.

The initial dazzle of the lights might be captivating, but there's a significant unspoken reality that must be acknowledged: this expo has been revitalized out of a sense of urgency. It's an urgency imposed by the survival impulse of the car industry, which faces immense challenges due to ongoing changes and a sector-wide structural crisis. This has resulted in profit downturns, corporate reorganizations, and, most notably, a climate of uncertainty.

New versions of the Renault 4, the darling of Paris

Therefore, everyone who needs to be involved is gathered in Paris. The Volkswagen Group, which manufactures more than it sells and must shut down several of its factories; Stellantis, which has to persuade consumers (and shareholders) that it provides viable multi-energy vehicles in order to boost sales by the year 2025.

The German automakers from BMW have demonstrated foresight beyond their competitors. However, they are tasked with maintaining a balance across three continents to avoid European tariffs on Chinese goods and prevent retaliatory actions from the government in Beijing.

Renault makes an appearance, almost like a host, courtesy of Luca De Meo's robust leadership. Meanwhile, Tesla, which until recently shunned trade fairs as 'old-fashioned,' now finds itself, much like Ford, needing to draw attention.

Of course, there are the Chinese with the strongest presence, such as BYD, along with various other, often lesser-known brands that have just entered the European market. They aim to showcase their products in Paris while simultaneously seeking to comprehend the automotive workings in this part of the world, where everything is notably more complex.

At the Paris Motor Show, the luxury car makers (such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, etc.) seem to be unaffected by the crisis by any standard. It's unfortunate for the attendees who were looking forward to getting lost in their fantasies once again. Moreover, there's a noticeable absence of a robust presence from Toyota and the entire spectrum of Japanese and Korean manufacturers, except for Kia which has taken the opportunity to launch its latest electric vehicle.

This time around, the roster of those present (and absent) has made it clearer than ever which individuals require attention and which do not. On a brighter note, it appears that the fair is once again becoming the hub where an industry, which was once deluded by the notion of succeeding solo, is now compelled to operate collaboratively.

Only by uniting can we first ensure our survival and then (possibly) aspire to triumph.
