Norris Touts McLaren’s Dual Strength Over Red Bull in F1 Title Chase, Pokes Fun at Perez’s Solo Struggle
Lando Norris hints at a significant edge for McLaren over Red Bull with a 'double the advantage' remark aimed at Sergio Perez.
Lando Norris emphasized McLaren's significant benefit of competing with two Formula 1 cars, subtly criticizing Sergio Perez after the Canadian Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen clinched his sixth win of the 2024 Formula 1 season, whereas Sergio Perez faced an early exit in Q1 and later retired from the race due to a collision that damaged his front wing, forcing him to return to the pits.
Ferrari's inability to earn points allowed Red Bull to widen their advantage in the constructors' standings, however, Perez's inconsistent performance is likely to raise worries.
Norris emphasized that McLaren is competing with both of their cars, whereas Verstappen usually contends by himself.
Evaluating the competition among the teams, Norris expressed, "Honestly, right now, I believe it's a close contest between Ferrari and ourselves. We'll continue to strive forward, and I reckon that's currently one of our major advantages.
"At McLaren, we boast two drivers who consistently perform at their peak, extracting nearly all potential from the car each weekend without fail. Indeed, it's uncommon to find many other teams in the grid with such consistency. Therefore, our focus shifts to how we measure up against Ferrari."
"Once more, we've demonstrated greater consistency as a team leading up to this weekend. They've encountered a few errors and faced some challenges for reasons unknown. However, when all is said and done, having two will surpass having just one, especially in Max's situation. We're performing well, yet it's crucial we continue to strive for improvement by introducing further enhancements and similar advancements."
"With Mercedes entering the fray, securing significant points like we managed today will become increasingly challenging."
Verstappen remains optimistic about Red Bull's prospects for clinching the constructors' title this season, emphasizing the importance of continued victories.
"Verstappen commented, “I believe the real setback for Checo occurred yesterday. Obviously, beginning at the back makes it extremely challenging under these circumstances. Then, I noticed he had to withdraw due to the damage."
"Understanding the importance of maintaining a lead was crucial for me; I realized that achieving high scores was essential to prevent other teams from closing the gap. However, I believe that consistently securing victories is key. By earning 25 points, even if competitors place in second or third, the impact on our lead is minimal. Occasionally, there can be exceptions, but ideally, we aim to have both of our cars finish at the top. I'm confident that we'll see this dynamic shift back in our favor shortly."
"Essentially, our main focus should be on improving our vehicle to enhance its drivability and overall comfort. By doing so, I'm confident that we can return both of our cars to the top performance levels we experienced at the season's start."
