Nico Hulkenberg Dismisses Early Signing Critique, Embraces Challenge with Audi’s F1 Entry
F1's least acknowledged driver addresses early contract signing criticisms
"I'm aware – as are they – that there's a need for enhancement in the offering.”
Nico Hulkenberg has dismissed suggestions that he rushed into signing with Audi, potentially missing out on superior opportunities.
The renowned German car maker Audi has announced its plans to join Formula 1 starting in 2026, coinciding with the introduction of new
In the upcoming season, they will still compete under the Sauber name, but they've signed Hulkenberg from Haas for several years. He's set to be the German representative for Audi's Formula 1 initiative.
Natalie Pinkham has described him as "one of the most underrated drivers."
F1 Nation podcast host Tom Clarkson criticized Hulkenberg for committing “too soon,” citing his remarkable performance this season and the availability of other options for him to consider.
Hulkenberg replied during an interview with Sky Sports, stating, “I don’t believe that's the case. I don’t envision a chance for me with any of the leading four teams.
"My thoughts and awareness are tranquil and lucid."
Audi is embarking on a fresh initiative. Despite their lofty goals, they have yet to demonstrate any proven success in Formula 1.
Hulkenberg confessed, "Every team always assures you of perfect conditions! They claim to be taking various actions…
"Clearly, Audi stands as a highly influential and prominent brand globally."
"I'm aware of the intense dedication they're showing, the resources they're allocating, and the efforts they're making to ensure they are both competitive and successful."
Additionally, the rule modification set for 2026 presents an excellent chance for a fresh manufacturer to enter the scene.
"This represents a fresh start, complete with the funding, workforce, financial allocation, and the influence of the brand. For me and my professional journey, this project is thrilling."
This season, Sauber's team, featuring Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou as their racers, has yet to earn any points after 14 races. Both competitors find themselves at the lowest ranks within the F1 standings.
Hulkenberg responded, "I never claimed it would be handed to us without effort, or that success is assured. We're definitely facing a lengthy journey ahead."
"Audi carries a significant amount of ambition and pressure. This is always the case when competing on behalf of a manufacturer."
"I'm not concerned. However, I am aware – and so are they – that there's a necessity for them to enhance what they're offering."
At 36, Hulkenberg has impressed during both qualifying and race days this season while competing for Haas.
Last season, Haas ended up at the bottom of the constructors' standings, however, Hulkenberg has managed to secure points in five separate events.
He has played a pivotal role in elevating Haas to the seventh position in the constructors’ standings.
Hulkenberg stated, "We seized the opportunity when the leading teams and their cars faced difficulties and challenges. We capitalized on those moments. It was a significant achievement for us."
"In the previous year, the technical department underwent significant transformations. Several members departed from the team, leading to a rearrangement. Following these changes, Ayao's entry into the team brought about further modifications."
"Previously contained, it has now liberated individuals in specific sectors. Apparently, they operate with greater efficiency and improved quality."
However, a stain on his reputation persists.
He holds the record for the most Formula 1 Grand Prix starts, totaling 217, without ever achieving a podium finish.
To what extent does that impact Hulkenberg's thoughts?
"He chuckled, saying, 'None at all.' He mentioned a statistic but then pointed out the reality that despite not having won any grand prix, Audi chose him over other available drivers who had won grands prix."
"Statistics are constantly available, yet they don't reveal the real story."
He has successfully landed what could be considered the most significant opportunity of his extensive career, after failing to secure a full-time driving position in Formula 1 for the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
Haas revived his professional life and is now repaying the kindness.
"Hulkenberg described it as a story straight out of a fairytale."
"In 2019, I felt exhausted by F1 and desired a hiatus. Opting out was a deliberate choice, and I found pleasure in life beyond the realm of motorsport."
Gradually, the realization dawned on me that I wasn’t finished after all; there was still work left to do.
"That period held great significance for me. It's an incredible tale within the world of racing, featuring an unforeseen comeback…"
