Mini Electrifies Performance with John Cooper Works Cooper and Aceman EVs

Mini introduces a sportier edge to its electric vehicle lineup with the addition of John Cooper Works versions, marking the first time the performance-focused JCW badge is being used on electric models, and it's being rolled out on a pair of vehicles at once.

During the 2024 Paris motor exhibition on Monday, the JCW iterations of the Mini Cooper electric hatchback and the smaller Aceman crossover were showcased for the first time. The Cooper hatchback is available in both electric and traditional gas engine options, whereas the Aceman sits between the Cooper and Countryman in size and is only available with an electric powertrain. Presently, neither of these electric vehicles is on sale in the American market.

Each model under the JCW lineup is equipped with a 255-horsepower motor powering the front wheels. Mini states that the electric JCW Cooper hatchback can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 5.9 seconds, while the JCW Aceman requires 6.4 seconds, with both variants capped at a top speed of 124 mph. Enhancements specific to the JCW series encompass a performance-oriented suspension setup, enhanced braking systems, and a special go-kart mode that offers a brief surge in power.

Alterations in design feature exterior enhancements with unique body additions and exclusive wheel designs, with the JCW Cooper EV sporting 18-inch rims and the JCW Aceman boasting 19-inch ones. The interior is decked out in a black and red color scheme, featuring a dashboard with a textured knit pattern, and seating adorned with black fabric highlighted by red stitching. Added exclusively for the JCW models are special elements such as a lighting package that casts a glow over the ceiling, alongside updated visual themes for the onboard entertainment system interfaces.

Both versions come equipped with the same 54.2-kWh battery, which, according to Mini's projections, should offer a driving range of 230 miles for the JCW Cooper and 220 miles for the JCW Aceman under WLTP standards. However, if these JCW variants were to be sold in the U.S. market, the EPA range estimates are expected to be less.

The initial production of the Electric Cooper and Aceman models is set to take place in China, which will result in significant import duties when brought into the U.S. Mini has announced plans to begin producing the electric Cooper in the U.K. starting in 2026, which could facilitate its entry into the U.S. market. Additionally, Mini has expressed intentions to transition fully to electric vehicles by the early 2030s.
