Mick Schumacher Eyes Sauber Seat in Last Chance for 2025 F1 Grid Amidst Fierce Competition and Backup Plans
Mick Schumacher is a contender for the final available seat in Formula 1.
"Having a backup plan is essential."
Mick Schumacher aims to secure a spot with Sauber for the 2025 season.
The final available spot in the 2025 F1 driver roster is about to be finalized.
Michael Schumacher's son has suggested that he is in the running and is aiming to be chosen.
In an interview with Sky Germany, he mentioned having an alternative plan: "If Plan A fails, I'll address the situation when the time comes."
"Having a backup plan is crucial. Currently, I'm uncertain about the direction things are heading."
Schumacher stated that Sauber is about to make a decision soon.
However, Valtteri Bottas, who is their current driver, is also a top candidate.
"Planning ahead is definitely a top priority for me right now since the end of the year is approaching quickly, much like how Christmas feels near," Bottas commented in Singapore.
Bottas, who is 35 years old, has expressed a preference for a long-term contract over a brief agreement.
Franco Colapinto, who has been making a strong impression with Williams since stepping in for Logan Sargeant halfway through the season, might also be an option.
Schumacher offers a compelling option.
Sauber, which will completely transition to Audi in 2026, has already secured Nico Hulkenberg for the next season, ensuring a German representative on the team.
Audi, a prominent German automaker, plans to enlist the son of a national icon to advance their initiative.
Schumacher would also be a more youthful choice compared to Bottas.
Schumacher has been attempting to return to the Formula 1 circuit ever since Haas let him go at the conclusion of the 2022 season, following two years with the team.
Former team principal Guenther Steiner mentioned the regularity of Schumacher's accidents back then.
For the past two years, Schumacher has taken on the role of Mercedes' third driver, dedicating significant effort to the simulator.
This year, he became part of Alpine's endurance program and competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race.
However, Schumacher did not secure a spot with the Alpine F1 team, as the opportunity was given to Jack Doohan instead.
