Mercedes Secures ‘On Merit’ Pole at British GP: Wolff Excited for Upcoming Upgrades Amid Team Resurgence
Toto Wolff praises rightful British GP pole win | Anticipates great outcomes from upcoming improvements
Toto Wolff expressed his joy over Mercedes clinching the pole position for the British Grand Prix, emphasizing that it was earned through genuine performance.
Toto Wolff praised Mercedes' top two positions in the F1 qualifying round for the British Grand Prix, describing it as "remarkable" and stating that his team earned the pole position "fairly" at Silverstone.
Mercedes achieved their first one-two starting grid placement since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, with George Russell leading the way in pole position, followed by teammate Lewis Hamilton.
During this weekend's rainy conditions, the team demonstrated impressive speed, yet their performance in dry conditions remained an enigma.
Discussing Mercedes securing the pole position at Silverstone, Wolff commented to Sky Sports, "It's remarkable. You bring up the grand prix victor from Austria, and here we are with a front-row sweep.
"Who could have imagined this just a few months back? It seems unlikely. Perhaps, we're also contemplating the concept of karma.
"It's important not to become overly confident just because you've made a positive start, and the same caution applies for the future."
Wolff acknowledged that Mercedes had aspirations for rainy conditions following their strong performance in FP3.
"We had our fingers crossed for rain after our strong performance in the third free practice session, and now, seeing the positive outcome, it's encouraging," he further stated. "I believe the weather plays to our advantage. It's typical British weather, and we're hoping it sticks with us throughout the summer, no matter where we are."
"As we reach the conclusion, I'm pleased that we achieved this through integrity and deserving effort, yet it's important not to celebrate too soon before the day is over."
Mercedes has experienced an impressive comeback in recent competitions following a disappointing beginning to the season.
Until their performance in Canada last month, Mercedes hadn't secured a podium finish, marking their poorest season opening in more than ten years.
Wolff disclosed that Mercedes has identified a distinct path for their vehicle's evolution, hinting at upcoming enhancements slated for debut in Hungary and Belgium.
"He expressed enthusiasm, saying, 'The challenge we've faced for the past two years has been a lack of clear strategy. Our performance was inconsistent; we'd have a promising weekend followed by a disappointing one, which was confusing. However, before Imola, and especially during Imola, it was the first occasion our car behaved as anticipated, even though it wasn't leading the pack yet. Since then, we've managed to introduce new components to the vehicle every weekend and understand its behavior better.'"
"We plan to maintain our approach. We hold great anticipation for all the enhancements scheduled for the vehicle in Budapest and Spa."
