Meituan Riders Surpass Average Beijing Worker in Earnings: Gig Employment Emerges as Viable Interim Option Amid Economic Challenges
Data from food delivery behemoth Meituan reveals that its delivery personnel earn more than the typical worker in Beijing. The company's recent study suggests that gig work serves as a viable option for individuals seeking employment between permanent jobs.
The report indicates that Meituan delivery workers, who are based in large cities and fulfill the company's basic work hours, earned an average monthly income of 11,000 yuan (around US$1,550) in June. Conversely, those who worked less than the required minimum hours received an average of 7,354 yuan.
Both figures exceeded Beijing's average monthly disposable income of 7,180 yuan for the first half of the year.
As China continues to grapple with economic difficulties, an increasing number of individuals are opting for part-time work in the food delivery and taxi services industries as a means to sustain themselves while they search for permanent employment.
According to the city's statistical department, the number of delivery employees in Beijing saw a significant increase of 50% from last year, reaching 17,000 in the first half of this year. Concurrently, the jobless rate experienced a slight decrease to 4.1%.
