McLaren’s Clear Stance: Piastri and Norris “Free to Race” at Dutch Grand Prix Amid Championship Battle
"Oscar Piastri has been given the green light to compete against Lando Norris during the Dutch Grand Prix, according to Connor McDonagh's report from Zandvoort.
Oscar Piastri has verified that he remains "unrestricted in competing" against his McLaren F1 colleague Lando Norris during the Dutch Grand Prix.
Norris remains in the running for this year’s F1 drivers’ championship, lagging behind Max Verstappen by 78 points.
Considering McLaren's notable quick pace in the latest races compared to Red Bull, Verstappen's advantage can still be overcome, but it will necessitate Norris exploiting each chance to the fullest.
McLaren found themselves embroiled in a controversy over team instructions during the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Piastri took the lead from Norris in the first lap and remained in front for the majority of the race. However, he fell behind during the pit stops when McLaren responded to an undercut strategy from a competitor.
Norris took the lead in the race, yet McLaren directed him to yield his position. He complied only after his race engineer, Will Joseph, had to repeatedly plead over the team radio.
Addressing reporters, among them Crash.net, during the FIA news briefing, Piastri emphasized that the ‘regulations remain the same’.
"He emphasized that the regulations are crystal clear and have remained unchanged," he stated. "Moreover, we are allowed to compete against each other in an attempt to secure victory.
"Undoubtedly, we're engaged in a battle for the Constructors’ Championship, and we're fully aware of the significant implications it holds for our team. However, we have consistently demonstrated our ability to compete against one another effectively and fairly."
"Indeed, we have the liberty to compete and aim to win the race, and this has remained unchanged."
Norris stated, "We have the liberty to compete. The only guideline we've ever had is to avoid colliding with one another. That's essentially the sole rule."
"Besides, we've consistently had the liberty to compete. In previous competitions, we've performed admirably. So, all of that is beneficial for us."
