McLaren Sets Sights on F1 Constructors’ Title as First Priority, Piastri and Team Confident Ahead of Dutch GP
Oscar Piastri: Achieving the F1 team championship is McLaren's initial goal, not individual victories
"Our primary goal is to secure the team championship, and I believe we are in a strong position to accomplish this."
Oscar Piastri disclosed that McLaren's primary objective for this year is securing the F1 constructors' championship, rather than focusing on the drivers' championship.
Ahead of this month's Dutch Grand Prix, McLaren is only 42 points away from Red Bull in the team rankings.
In the race for the drivers' championship, Lando Norris is the nearest competitor to Max Verstappen, however, the gap between them is 78 points.
McLaren is hopeful about securing their inaugural team championship since 1998, following Red Bull's decision to retain Sergio Perez.
In a conversation with Sky Sports News, Piastri described McLaren's objectives for the latter half of the season.
"The initial goal is to secure the constructors' championship for the team, and I believe we stand a strong possibility of achieving it," Piastri remarked.
"In the past six or seven races, we've been narrowing the distance with Red Bull."
"For me personally, aiming for the top positions in the drivers' standings is a goal. While clinching the championship may seem like a stretch, my focus is on delivering strong performances consistently and contributing significantly to my team's success in securing the constructors' title."
"Should there be a scenario down the line where assisting Lando becomes necessary, then naturally, it's something we'll talk about. However, the primary goal remains to secure the constructors' championship and to perform well personally too."
McLaren's chief executive Zak Brown has emphasized that both aspects continue to be crucial goals, highlighting the necessity of performing well in the drivers' championship to secure victory in the constructors' championship.
"Brown emphasized the importance of both drivers and constructors, stating that achieving victory in the constructors' championship necessitates having both drivers finish as high as possible. He expressed his desire for both drivers to secure positions within the top three."
"Currently, we're in second and fourth positions. As we approach the drivers' championship, it narrows our gap in the constructors' championship as well, so we're targeting both titles since every point matters."
"I suppose our upcoming major milestone would involve aiming for the championship title. It's definitely a pleasant sensation. The drivers, the crew, and all involved have performed excellently to secure 10 consecutive podium finishes. It's quite remarkable."
"Vying for both the Drivers' and Constructors' Championship titles as we head into the summer hiatus is an exciting position to find ourselves in. There's a significant amount of effort required; it won't be a walk in the park. The latter half of the season promises to be thrilling, yet I'm thoroughly pleased with all we've achieved here at McLaren."
