Martin Brundle on Daniel Ricciardo’s Career Trajectory: A Cautionary Tale of Talent and Decision Making in F1
Martin Brundle shares his opinion on Daniel Ricciardo following Jacques Villeneuve's negative comments.
Esteemed Formula 1 commentator Martin Brundle has shared his thoughts on the recent backlash Daniel Ricciardo faced, expressing regret that the Australian driver had departed from Red Bull.
Ricciardo notably parted ways with Red Bull in 2018, feeling aggrieved due to the team's apparent preference for Max Verstappen.
Ricciardo experienced a fair amount of achievement with Renault, especially during 2020, but his performance declined after moving to McLaren.
Lando Norris outperformed Ricciardo over their two-year stint together at Woking, leading to Ricciardo's replacement by Oscar Piastri for the 2023 season.
Since making his comeback to Formula 1 with Red Bull, he has faced challenges, typically finding himself at a disadvantage compared to Yuki Tsunoda.
Sharing his opinion on Ricciardo's performance following criticism from Jacques Villeneuve during the Canadian Grand Prix weekend.
In his column following the Canadian Grand Prix, Brundle mentioned, “Just to set the record straight, since it’s become a subject of much discussion after my colleague at Sky Sports F1, Jacques Villeneuve, shared his strong views.
"I hold a deep admiration for all F1 racers, particularly for Daniel and Jacques, understanding the immense challenge of piloting those formidable vehicles in the glare of public attention.
Daniel has secured victories in eight Grand Prix events, highlighted by a remarkable win in Monaco, achieved podium finishes 32 times, and consistently demonstrated exceptional skill at the global level.
"However, those achievements are now in the past, and I regret his departure from Red Bull at the close of 2018. It was a decision made more from emotion than logic; confronting Max in a superior vehicle would have undoubtedly compelled him to elevate his performance even more."
Brundle is of the opinion that Ricciardo hasn't been the same caliber of driver ever since he departed from Red Bull.
"He added, "Ricciardo appeared to have lost his previous form as a driver."
It's evident that he maintains both quickness and skill in racing, as observed during the Miami Sprint, yet there seems to be a mental or strategic barrier hindering his performance, affecting his chances and career duration.
