Marquez’s Mastery Without Victory: A Deep Dive into His Impressive Season and Ducati Promotion
Breaking Down: Assessing Marc Marquez's Current Season with a Critical Score
No victories yet, though there have been some remarkable recoveries…
The recent episode of the Crash MotoGP podcast extensively discussed Marc Marquez's performance this season.
Despite not securing his inaugural victory on a Ducati, his performances have merited an elevation to the brand's premier squad for the upcoming season.
Marquez currently occupies the third position in the championship standings, following nine of the scheduled 20 rounds, trailing the front-runner, Pecco Bagnaia, by 56 points.
Significantly, the grin has made a comeback following a challenging time at Repsol Honda, which concluded last year.
Here's our team's assessment of the Gresini rider's performance in 2024 to date…
"Jordan Moreland mentioned, “He's yet to secure a grand prix victory. I might have rated him an 8, yet for the comeback performances, it's an 8.5."
"Beginning from positions 13 and 14, he managed to secure a spot on the grand prix podium. His performances were astounding."
"It's been fantastic to witness his comeback. Next year, he's secured a spot with the factory Ducati team, which plays a significant role in it."
"However, the major race victory continues to evade him. He's bound to feel let down by not securing a win at the Sachsenring. The weekend was marked by highs and lows."
"During the Grand Prix at COTA, he encountered problems, and at the Jerez sprint, he struggled with wet spots on the track. Despite these minor setbacks, it's been an outstanding season for Marquez thus far."
Peter McLaren gave Marquez a score of 8 out of 10, characterizing his season to date as "mission achieved".
He also mentioned, "His move to Gresini was about giving his career another shot, to discover if the passion for racing was still alive in him, and to confirm if he still possessed the necessary skills. Without a doubt, he does.
"He's already secured the contract with the factory Ducati team. What an incredible six months."
The only thing lacking is a victory.
"Consider his position relative to his peers riding the same model."
"A reasonable mark would fall within the range of 8 to 9."
Robert Jones also gave Marquez a rating of 8 out of 10, stating, "I believe he has been outstanding."
Occasionally, we find ourselves overly focused on elite athletes such as Marc Marquez, assuming that transitioning from Honda to Ducati would be a breeze for someone of his caliber.
"Considering the significant duration he dedicated to mastering a Honda, transitioning to a Ducati and adapting so effectively is quite an achievement. From the outset, he's been commendable, engaging in battles with notable riders such as Martin and Bagnaia, despite being early in his adjustment phase."
The victory remains elusive. At Jerez, Le Mans, and Sachsenring, he had the speed to secure wins at these three grand prix events. He was in a position to clinch the sprint victory at Jerez but ended up crashing while in front.
"Opportunities have come his way, and he's missed them. However, despite not securing a victory, the return journeys, especially with a bike that's new to him, have been absolutely extraordinary."
At the Sachsenring, Marquez demonstrated his superiority over the other GP23s, with Fabio di Giannantonio narrowing the distance somewhat, yet Marquez still proved to have the upper hand.
"The season has been quite successful."
"He was the ideal choice for Ducati to pair with Bagnaia for the upcoming season."
"I believe he's going to secure a victory sometime during this season. However, it's been an impressive beginning to his initial season with Ducati."
