Marc Marquez’s Perfect Weekend: Breaking a Three-Year Victory Drought at Aragon MotoGP
Marc Marquez admitted that he "felt internal pressure" to achieve a "flawless" performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend. "During the Sprint race, I wasn't having fun because I was aware of the significance of today," he explained.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win last weekend at the Aragon MotoGP, celebrating what he called a "perfect" weekend.
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, claimed a commanding victory in the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
Marquez didn’t lead the Warm Up session, which was damp from rain that fell overnight on Saturday and continued into Sunday morning, because he didn’t record a lap time.
"It was an ideal weekend," Marquez stated during the press conference after the race. "We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where I agreed with the team to remain in the garage."
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had accumulated over nearly three years without a win, and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the race, we had an incredible sensation right from the start," he remarked. "The race was extremely long, and it was challenging to manage our emotions in the final laps, but when I finally crossed the finish line, it felt like I had shed 3-4 kilograms."
“Due to the increasing weight on my back with each step, winning this was unbelievable. My thoughts immediately went to the entire journey, the people who supported me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez.”
"They provided me with significant support, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me the chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set new goals and will continue to push forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to relax and contemplate during the last few laps.
"In the final three laps, my thoughts were already on the podium," he remarked. "Even more than the podium, I was thinking about the Gresini garage. It's always a lively and joyful place, like a constant celebration."
"In addition to that, the most important factor was the support from those around me. When facing extremely challenging circumstances, having a compassionate and supportive team—people who are even more affected by the situation than I am—truly made a significant impact."
"The celebration felt unusual because in other races, the adrenaline was much higher, even when celebrating second or third places. Today, it was more about emotion than adrenaline."
Marquez acknowledged feeling some pressure to finish the weekend with a Grand Prix win after leading every session except the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up.
"I felt a lot of pressure today," he remarked. "You could see in the Sprint yesterday that I wasn't having fun because I was aware of how crucial today was and recognized that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"That's why I aimed to stay focused. When you're fast, everything seems manageable—you appear consistent and smart. But you're the same person; without speed, handling the situation becomes incredibly challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to match the performance of the top competitors."
After securing victory, Marquez ranks this win alongside his 2021 German Grand Prix success, which marked his first triumph following the arm injury he sustained at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez commented, "I consider it to be on par with my experience in Germany in 2021."
"When facing numerous injuries and challenging times, the significance of each victory changes."
"Although I have won 60 times, those two particular victories, along with my first win in MotoGP, hold the most significance. They boost your confidence in a unique way and provide that additional sense of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding along, it felt effortless, and I was in the zone but I was especially focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite this being Marquez's twelfth race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he mentioned that he had believed in the possibility of winning ever since he initially rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez felt confident that a race win was within reach. He noted that they would have their chances. However, he emphasized that competing for the championship requires continued effort.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would happen eventually."
