Marc Marquez Ends Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend, Overcoming Emotional Pressure
Marc Marquez admitted to "putting pressure on himself" to achieve a flawless performance at the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He mentioned that during the Sprint, he couldn't fully enjoy the race because he was aware of the day's significance.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year stretch without a win by securing a victory at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a race he called "perfect" in every way.
Marquez led every practice session, secured pole position with an 0.8-second advantage, triumphed decisively in the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The Warm Up session, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, was the only one where Marquez didn't lead, as he didn't record a lap time.
Marquez described the weekend as flawless during the post-race press conference. He mentioned that they dominated every session, except for the Warm Up, where he and his team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had accumulated over nearly three years without a win and the sense of relief he experienced as he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the race, we had an incredible sensation from the start," he stated. "It was an exceptionally long race, and managing emotions during the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line felt like shedding 3-4kg."
"Due to the increasing strain on my back, winning this was unbelievable. Instantly, my mind went to the journey we undertook, the support from everyone around me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided me with substantial support, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me the chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to put in my best effort, and we achieved our goal. Now, we set new objectives and continue to push forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate during the last few laps.
“In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium,” he mentioned. “But even beyond the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful; it's constantly a celebration there.”
"Besides that, the most important factor was the people surrounding me. Being in a challenging and profound situation, without a genuinely compassionate team, truly kind individuals who were even more affected than I was, it wouldn't have been the same."
"The celebration felt unusual, as the excitement in previous races where I finished second or third was greater. Today, the feeling was more about emotion rather than adrenaline."
After leading every session except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed that he was under some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"Today, I pushed myself hard," he stated. "You might have noticed during yesterday's Sprint that I wasn't having a good time because I was aware of how crucial today would be and recognized the significant chance I had."
"For that reason, I aimed to stay concentrated. When you have the necessary speed, it seems like you can handle the situation well, remain consistent, and make smart decisions. However, without that speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and strive to keep up with the leading competitors."
Having secured the win, Marquez regards it as significant as his victory at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his return to triumph after suffering a broken arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
"I consider it to be on par with the event in Germany in 2021," Marquez remarked.
"When facing numerous injuries and challenging times, the significance of each win is heightened."
"Although I have won 60 times, those two wins, along with my initial victory in MotoGP, stand out as the most significant. They boost your confidence in a unique way and provide an additional sense of assurance."
"I hadn’t felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding effortlessly, smoothly, but I was extremely focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite it being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he mentioned that he had believed a win was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez noted that a race victory is within reach. He stated that the realization came to him that they will get their chances. However, competing for the championship is another matter, and they need to continue their efforts for that goal.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would inevitably come."
