Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Weekend at Aragon MotoGP
Marc Marquez admitted to "putting pressure on himself" to achieve an "ideal" weekend at the Aragon MotoGP.
"I didn't have fun during the Sprint because I was aware of the significance of today," he said.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win last weekend at the Aragon MotoGP, achieving a triumph he called a "perfect" weekend.
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second margin, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session not led by Marquez was the Warm Up, which remained damp due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, as he did not record a lap time.
Marquez described the weekend as flawless during the post-race press conference. He mentioned that they dominated all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where he and his team chose to remain in the pit.
Marquez discussed the emotional journey of nearly three years without a win, and the sense of relief he experienced as he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the race, we felt incredible right from the start," he mentioned. "It was an extremely lengthy race, and managing emotions in the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line felt like I shed 3–4kg."
"Due to my increasing back pain, winning this was remarkable. I instantly began reflecting on all the steps we took, the people involved, and my loved ones – my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, with the Gresini team offering me a crucial opportunity. I approached it as a novice rider, gave my all, and we succeeded. Now we have set new goals and continue to move forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him the luxury of contemplation in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he mentioned. "Beyond just the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always entertaining and joyful; it's constantly a celebration there."
"Additionally, the main factor was the people surrounding me. When you're in a challenging and intense situation, having a supportive and compassionate team—people who are enduring even more than you are—can make all the difference."
"The celebration was quite unusual because in other races, the adrenaline levels were higher, even when coming in second or third place. Today was more about feeling emotion rather than experiencing adrenaline."
After leading every session except the rain-affected Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez acknowledged that he was under some pressure to finish the weekend with a Grand Prix win.
“I felt a lot of pressure today,” he commented. “Yesterday during the Sprint, I couldn’t really enjoy myself because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me.”
"That's why I aimed to stay focused. If you have the speed, it seems like you can handle the situation well, remain consistent, and make smart decisions. But without the speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim for better speed in the upcoming races and try to stay competitive with the leading racers."
Marquez counts this victory as significant as his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his comeback following an arm injury sustained at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez mentioned that he considers it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany.
"When you're dealing with numerous injuries and facing challenging times, the significance of wins changes."
"I did win 60 times, but those two wins, along with my first MotoGP victory, are the most significant. They provide a unique boost of confidence and give you that extra assurance."
"I hadn't been feeling well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding, it felt effortless, and I was in the zone, but I made sure to stay extra focused to avoid any errors."
Despite this being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed in the possibility of winning ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez mentioned, "I understood that a race victory is on the horizon." He added that this realization made him confident they would get their chances. However, he noted that competing for the championship requires continued effort and hard work.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually happen."
