The current administration had committed to reviving Rishi Sunak’s key tobacco legislation, designed to prohibit the sale of cigarettes to anyone born after a certain year, making them perpetually unable to purchase tobacco. However, this initiative was put on hold prior to the election.
This week, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer indicated that his efforts might extend to prohibiting smoking in open-air settings as well, aiming to decrease the fatalities associated with tobacco consumption.
In response to concerns that this decision might harm businesses, Ms. Powell stated, "We are definitely not targeting the hospitality sector. We stand behind the hospitality industry. It is crucial for our local communities, our high streets, and our economy."
"I won't speculate on the specifics of upcoming legislation. However, I can confirm that any actions to broaden regulations concerning smoking will be implemented after thoroughly consulting with the hospitality industry."
