Liam Lawson’s F1 Return Marred by Grid Penalty: The Challenges Awaiting Him at the U.S. Grand Prix
Liam Lawson to Receive Grid Penalty Upon F1 Comeback – Here's the Reason
It has been disclosed that Liam Lawson will incur a grid penalty at the F1 United States Grand Prix.
Liam Lawson is facing a 10-position grid drop when he comes back to Formula 1 at the United States Grand Prix next month.
A 22-year-old from New Zealand has been brought into Red Bull's sister team to compete in the remaining six races of the season, taking the place of Daniel Ricciardo, who has not been performing up to expectations.
Lawson is set to return to racing after a year-long hiatus at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, but he will incur a grid penalty because of an engine change, sources have revealed.
In an interview with Motorsport-Total, Helmut Marko, the motorsport advisor for Red Bull, revealed that Lawson will face a grid penalty at the United States event.
Marko explained that the initial race wouldn't matter much due to an engine penalty. He mentioned that the driver would face a ten-place grid penalty in the sprint race, which complicates things at the Austin event.
In an interview with New Zealand’s Newstalk ZB radio station following the confirmation of the driver exchange, Lawson admitted that he is up against a significant challenge.
“Clearly, I’m really pleased, but with six rounds remaining in the season, I’m joining at a challenging moment,” he remarked.
"This will be a difficult moment. All these drivers have already completed three-quarters of the season, so I need to attempt to match their performance on tracks I haven't driven on before."
"It's going to be tough. I've had conversations with my parents and everyone who has supported me along the way. This moment is incredibly unique, but we don’t have much time to dwell on it – we need to get right to business."
Lawson remarked, "It's amusing because when I discovered the news and shared it with everyone, the initial reactions from my dad, my mum, and all the early sponsors were all the same. I could sense the relief in their voices even before they said anything."
"It wasn't excitement, but rather sheer relief, which is exactly how I felt as well, because this journey has been immense and many people have invested a lot into it, making it truly exhilarating."
