Leclerc’s Triumph and Piastri’s Ruthlessness: Unpacking the 2024 Italian GP Driver Performances
Italian Grand Prix F1 Driver Evaluations: Oscar Piastri Exhibits a Fierce Edge Missing in Lando Norris
Evaluating the top performers of the 2024 F1 Italian Grand Prix, according to Crash.net's driver assessments.
Charles Leclerc – 10
At Monza, Leclerc emerged as the standout performer, showcasing an exceptional display. He expertly handled his tyre strategy, securing Ferrari's inaugural victory on their home ground since 2019.
Oscar Piastri – 9
Failing to secure the top starting position, Piastri emerged as the faster McLaren competitor during the race. His performance was marked by boldness and remarkable speed. Piastri demonstrated qualities of a worthy victor, exhibiting a level of fierceness that his teammate currently seems to miss.
Lando Norris – 8
During the first lap at Monza, Norris didn't perform well, displaying below-average skill in racing when Piastri passed him at Turn 4. Oddly, Norris had difficulty managing his tyres, which is unusual given his strong track record in this area. A disappointing start, coupled with an error while leading Leclerc, affected his score negatively.
Carlos Sainz – 7.5
Sainz consistently delivers reliable yet somewhat lackluster performances for Ferrari. Despite having the advantage of newer tyres compared to Leclerc, he couldn't catch up to him in the final lap. Nonetheless, he contributed by slowing down Piastri's rapid advance towards the end.
Lewis Hamilton – 8
At Monza, Hamilton once again couldn't outpace Russell in qualifying, marking the 12th occurrence in 2024. However, the seven-time world champion showcased his skill on race day, delivering a solid performance with the W15.
Max Verstappen – 8
In comparison to his Q2 performance, Verstappen didn't meet expectations during the qualifying round. Despite this, Red Bull faced challenges throughout the weekend, prompting a focus on minimizing losses.
George Russell – 7.5
Russell showcased a strong performance in qualifying but made a crucial error at the start, misjudging Turn 1 and consequently damaging his car. This significantly impacted his race, yet he managed to make a commendable comeback, finishing in seventh place.
Sergio Perez – 7
During the Italian Grand Prix, Perez showcased one of his better performances as he managed to stay relatively close to Verstappen. With the Red Bull ranking as the fourth-best car on the Monza track, his eighth-place finish came as no shock.
Alex Albon – 8.5
Albon had an impressive showing, securing a ninth-place finish in his Williams. However, he expressed some dissatisfaction with the strategic decisions made by Williams during the race at Monza.
Kevin Magnussen – 7.5
Despite receiving a 10-second penalty that dropped him from ninth place, and facing a suspension from the next race because of too many penalty points, Magnussen delivered one of his most impressive performances this season, securing a spot in the top 10.
Fernando Alonso – 7.5
Aston Martin experienced a further dip in performance at Monza, with Alonso failing to close a 10-second gap to Magnussen, missing out on a top 10 finish.
Franco Colapinto made a commendable first appearance this weekend, stepping in for Logan Sargeant just before the event commenced.
Daniel Ricciardo – Score: 6.5
Ricciardo had a rough weekend with the Red Bull team, failing to earn any points. His struggles were compounded by a penalty he received for forcing Hulkenberg off the track on their way to Ascari.
Esteban Ocon – 7
Despite facing difficulties during the qualifying rounds, Ocon managed to outperform his teammate Gasly during the actual race.
Pierre Gasly – 6.5
During the race at Monza, Gasly found himself amidst conflict, getting into an incident with Magnussen, for which he was completely without fault. Nevertheless, it seemed Ocon had a more robust performance in the race.
Valtteri Bottas – 7
Bottas consistently outperforms his Sauber colleague, Zhou, demonstrating a clear advantage. Unfortunately, their vehicle lacks the speed to effectively compete in the midfield battles.
Nico Hulkenberg – 6
Hulkenberg, who had shown great promise in qualifying, found his race compromised early on after a clash with Ricciardo. His hopes for a recovery were dashed following a bold overtaking attempt on Tsunoda at the first turn, which resulted in a 10-second penalty.
Zhou Guanyu – 6
Zhou's real capabilities were obscured due to a tumultuous conclusion to Q1 at Monza, which disrupted his last lap. Nevertheless, during the race, his presence was hardly noticeable, with Sauber clearly being the slowest team.
Lance Stroll – 6
Stroll had a disappointing weekend, failing to compete for a spot within the top 10.
Yuki Tsunoda – 5.5
Tsunoda found himself overshadowed by Ricciardo during the qualifying rounds and subsequently had to exit the race prematurely following a collision with Hulkenberg.
