Leclerc Sheds Light on Ferrari’s Concerns Over McLaren’s “Controversial” Rear Wing Ahead of Singapore GP
Charles Leclerc mentioned that Ferrari has internally reviewed McLaren's contentious rear wing.
Charles Leclerc has mentioned that Ferrari has internally talked about the "debatable" rear wing of their Formula 1 competitor, McLaren.
Before the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix, the FIA, which oversees Formula 1, announced they are examining data and any new information that came to light during the Baku races regarding McLaren's rear wing.
Broadcasted video from the Azerbaijan Grand Prix seemed to capture a segment of McLaren's back wing bending upwards during straight runs, leading to renewed examination in the midst of a continuing debate over flexible wings.
"Certainly, we've engaged in a conversation," Leclerc informed the press, including Motorsport, while in Singapore.
"I believe Fred [Vasseur, Ferrari team principal] is likely to delve deeper into this topic, but from what information has been shared with me, it's quite contentious, to put it mildly. So, I'll stop there and allow Fred to elaborate more on the issue."
Leclerc came in second to Oscar Piastri in Baku and confessed his astonishment at McLaren’s impressive straight-line velocity throughout the competition.
"The Monegasque remarked that Piastri's race-winning maneuver was indeed impressive. He added that upon noticing Piastri making his move on the inside, he was aware of his presence. He recognized it as a chance for Piastri to overtake, yet it did not cause him any significant concern."
I was aware that he was capable of moving ahead, yet I was also conscious that my tyres were just starting to warm up. I didn't want to exert too much pressure on them too soon, so I decided against adopting an overly defensive strategy that might seem foolish.
Nonetheless, it turned out my assessment was incorrect as his speed on the straights proved to be exceptionally powerful, and following that, I didn't get another chance to overtake.
"I believe there wasn't much more I could have improved upon during the attacks. Perhaps, I could have enhanced my defense. Yet, once more, I was unaware of their speed on the straights following that incident."
During Thursday's FIA press briefing, Piastri affirmed that McLaren's rear wing complies with regulations.
"Provided it clears all the examinations – and we undergo numerous tests, it succeeds, which means it's not the sole reason we're ahead in the competition," he remarked. "It complies with regulations, meets all the criteria, so I'm quite satisfied with it."
In the meantime, Lando Norris, a fellow team member, expressed his pride in what has been termed McLaren's 'mini DRS' maneuver.
"He clarified that all components have undergone rigorous testing and comply with the law. Our aim is to push the boundaries of what's possible within the confines of Formula 1 regulations. We've passed all necessary inspections to the satisfaction of the FIA."
"Now, I'm filled with pride and satisfaction seeing the team's efforts – they are stretching boundaries, which is essential for competing at the highest level and challenging others who are recognized for their explorations and maximizing every opportunity."
"Now, I feel a greater sense of pride in our team for maximizing our efforts in every aspect possible. Previously, we weren't in a position to do so, but now that we are, it brings me a lot of joy."
"In my view, witnessing it is genuinely fascinating."
