Lando Norris Voices Opinion: Carlos Sainz Deserved Red Bull Seat for F1 2025
Lando Norris Believes Carlos Sainz Would Have Been Better Off Joining Red Bull for the 2025 F1 Season
"In my opinion, he would have been better suited moving there. I'm partial, obviously, since I have a closer relationship with Carlos than with Checo [Perez], but in my view, Carlos has earned a great deal."
McLaren's Lando Norris believes Carlos Sainz's subsequent Formula 1 team ought to have been Red Bull.
This week, Williams revealed that Sainz would join their Formula 1 team as a new driver for the 2025 season, partnering with Alex Albon.
This marks the conclusion of prolonged rumors regarding Sainz's career prospects and its broader effects on the Formula 1 driver landscape.
Sainz was strongly rumored to be considering Sauber and Alpine, but he held off on making a choice, waiting to see if a spot would become available at Red Bull or Mercedes.
Norris, who partnered with Sainz at McLaren during the 2019 and 2020 seasons, believes the Spanish driver was worthy of a promotion to Red Bull.
"He conveyed to Sky, 'I'm unaware of the strategies of the leading teams, but the straightforward choice seems to be Red Bull.'"
"In my opinion, he really ought to have made the trip. Of course, I'm partial since I'm closer to Carlos than I am to Checo [Perez], but I genuinely believe Carlos has earned a great deal."
"He's established himself as a top-tier Formula 1 driver time and time again. I consider him a close friend."
The acquisition of Sainz by Williams marks a significant milestone for the squad, presenting them with their most formidable pair of drivers since 2016.
Despite being among the bottom three teams in Formula 1, the project led by James Vowles is showing signs of improvement and moving in a positive direction.
Norris expressed his contentment regarding Sainz's transition to Williams, stating, "It's great that he's maintaining his presence in Formula 1. I'm pleased he's secured a slot for 2025 and has the opportunity to help elevate Williams."
"Having him team up with Alex [Albon] will also benefit Formula 1."
"It's positive, yet I believe many would argue he ideally should have joined Red Bull instead. However, it's not up to me to decide."
Red Bull has shown support for Sergio Perez through to the season's end – however, his prospects for the upcoming year remain uncertain, with Helmut Marko hinting at possible shifts in 2025.
