Lando Norris Unsatisfied Despite Securing Pole at Singapore GP: ‘Expected a Bit More
Lando Norris was somewhat disappointed with his qualifying lap for pole position at the Singapore Grand Prix, as he had anticipated a better performance.
Lando Norris expressed that he had anticipated "a little more" from his McLaren F1 vehicle, even though he secured the pole position at the Singapore Grand Prix.
Norris outpaced his championship competitor Max Verstappen by 0.203 seconds in a single-lap battle for pole position, securing the top two spots on the starting grid for the race.
However, the British driver expressed some dissatisfaction with his lap, acknowledging that it was "not especially good".
He explained that it's challenging to get everything done in a single attempt because it's difficult.
"I was slightly behind in the first sector by a few tenths of a second, so I felt the need to push harder in the middle sector to compensate for that."
"However, it was still satisfying. We've performed well throughout the weekend. We had difficulty improving from practice to qualifying. We identified a good set-up and stuck with it, but didn't make any real advancements."
“I only managed to go slightly faster than my performance in FP3. I anticipated better results and found the sessions in Q1, Q2, and Q3 to be more challenging than I had hoped.”
"The car performed exceptionally well throughout the weekend, so it was reassuring and satisfying to go out and complete the lap."
Norris commented, "I believe we’ve performed excellently by showing up at the track with a well-functioning car."
"We haven't made any adjustments to the car throughout the weekend because any changes we make don't seem to have a significant impact."
"We've mostly just maintained the car without needing to make many changes, which has its advantages in several respects."
"However, it remained challenging to drive right until the end. For example, the final Q3 lap was difficult due to issues with locking and encountering bumps."
"I made several errors, so the car remained challenging to handle, yet it was very fast. This lets me drive at 99% of my ability and still perform well, thanks to a mix of different factors."
Norris enters Sunday’s race aiming to reduce Verstappen’s 59-point advantage in the championship standings.
When questioned about his level of confidence, Norris responded, "I would say I'm quite confident. We've performed exceptionally well throughout the weekend, although others have obviously made progress."
"We entered the qualifying session and it's obvious that Max made significant progress from yesterday to today. Mercedes also showed impressive speed in Q2, so they were competitive as well."
“They were following me very closely, more than I was comfortable with, especially compared to what I experienced in FP3 and other situations.
"However, I believe the car performs well in both qualifying and the race, as we demonstrated on Friday."
"I believe that once I take the lead, I can focus and pull away from the competition."
