Lando Norris Reflects on Missed Victory at British GP: McLaren’s Pit Stop Blunder and Strategy Missteps Under Scrutiny
'Lando Norris expresses disappointment as McLaren misses out on winning opportunity
Lando Norris acknowledges that McLaren squandered their opportunity to win at the British Grand Prix.
Lando Norris believes McLaren squandered their opportunity to clinch victory at the F1 British Grand Prix on Sunday.
Norris surged ahead, surpassing Max Verstappen and the Mercedes duo of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton in the initial phases at Silverstone, but an expensive second pit stop ultimately dashed his hopes for a win.
The British driver remained on the track for an additional lap compared to his competitors before changing to soft tires. However, he missed his pit mark, leading to a delayed pit stop that allowed Hamilton to gain an advantage by pitting earlier.
"During the last pit stop, we made a mistake," Norris confessed to media representatives, including Crash.net. "It was about that one lap, but actually, it wasn’t just the lap. Even if we had pitted at the ideal moment, choosing to switch to the soft tires was a misguided decision.
"In my opinion, Lewis would have emerged victorious regardless. Thus, two decisions made by us today were costly. It's particularly disheartening, especially in this context."
McLaren's team leader, Andrea Stella, admitted that their strategy was overly swayed by Hamilton's choice to switch to soft tires, in an effort to counteract the Mercedes competitor.
"Under those circumstances, we also sought to understand Lando's preferences and what our targets should be. One question we didn't pose, however, was whether he believed it would be challenging," he elaborated.
The question posed alongside Lando, and the decision made with him, revolved around whether using a C2 compound under these conditions would pose a challenge. However, in reality, the situation wasn't as difficult as anticipated. This was evidenced by Verstappen's smooth switch to dry tyres from a hard compound, which occurred without significant problems.
"In my opinion, this particular choice should have been reconsidered by us, similar to how we previously decided to halt Oscar during the double stack. It was our duty to acknowledge that the medium tyre was the optimal selection and commit to it."
"In retrospect, consulting with Lando introduced a sense of self-doubt that ultimately guided us down a path which proved to be significant."
McLaren has showcased one of the quickest vehicles in the latest competitions, yet Norris firmly believed that the team did not possess the speed necessary to secure a victory at Silverstone under clear weather conditions.
"Norris also mentioned, 'We simply didn't have the speed today.' He believed that the Mercedes outpaced them significantly once the track was fully dry.
"In the tougher, slick conditions, it appears we had an edge. However, there's still room for improvement. Despite dominating the weekend and consistently being at the forefront, we haven't always had the fastest car."
"It's essential that we continue collaborating as a group. I must also focus on my personal tasks. By doing so, we can combine our efforts, especially since there are still numerous advantages to consider."
"There's an abundance of positive aspects and everything seems to be in order. It's disheartening, however, that on several occasions this season, we've squandered opportunities that were seemingly within our grasp."
