Lando Norris Pinpoints Three-Word Solution for McLaren’s Start Line Struggles After Dutch GP Triumph
Lando Norris suggests a simple three-word solution to address McLaren's slow beginnings
Lando Norris has provided insight into his sluggish beginning at the Dutch Grand Prix, including his thoughts on the potential root cause of this consistent problem.
Lando Norris has hinted at a deeper problem being the root cause of McLaren's consistent poor performances at the start, which was evident once more at the F1 Dutch Grand Prix.
For the sixth straight attempt, Norris couldn't maintain his pole position into an early lead as Red Bull's Max Verstappen overtook him before reaching the first corner at Zandvoort.
However, this time was different, as the McLaren racer impressively regained his position by overtaking Verstappen again, ultimately securing a remarkable win by a margin of 22.9 seconds ahead of the driver from the Netherlands.
In response to a question on how to enhance his initial race performance, Norris quipped, "Avoid wheelspin."
He further stated, "What I'm saying is, we understand the necessary steps for an ideal beginning. However, we are dealing with very small differences."
"Since neither of us managed to understand correctly, it appears there might have been a deeper problem, or things weren't as they should have been, indicating that we've misunderstood something to a greater extent than others."
Oscar stands out as one of the top initial racers on the track. Although I'm not quite at his level, I'm fairly close. While I'm decent at starting, I'm not quite where we need to be.
"Once more, it was a competition that nearly escaped us at the start. Today stood out as unique compared to all other events. Just as I mentioned prior to this weekend, we must seek greater stability."
“We’ve put effort into improving our processes, and I believed we made progress, but clearly, the outcomes were not as expected.”
Norris mentioned he stayed "unexpectedly serene" even though he lost his leading position at the start.
"After making it through the first turn and getting off the starting line, I found myself surprisingly at ease," he recounted.
"Perhaps it's because I've grown accustomed to initially facing setbacks. I'm well-prepared for such situations. I remained calm and thought, 'Alright, what's my next move?'"
"That was simply to plan ahead and begin conserving tires while evaluating my speed potential."
"However, around corners 10, 11, 12, and 13, I somehow managed to close the gap with Max slightly and began to feel increasingly optimistic that I might actually be able to overtake him on the track."
"I had a couple of chances. On the first try, I wasn't quite there. But on the following lap, I managed to make it happen. From that point on, I focused and pushed forward."
