Lando Norris’ Engineer Unveils the Strategy Behind Overcoming Race Day ‘Demons’ and Silencing Critics
Lando Norris' race engineer shares their strategy to "overcome obstacles"
"We shouldn't fixate on what others consider issues"
Lando Norris' race engineer has explained how they manage to handle outside pressures to achieve victory in grand prix races.
Norris delivered an outstanding performance to clinch victory at the F1 Singapore Grand Prix, marking his third triumph of the season and narrowing the gap to Max Verstappen at the top of the drivers' standings.
Significantly in Singapore, Norris broke his streak of losing the lead on the first lap after starting from pole position.
However, Will Joseph, who has guided Norris throughout his ascent in Formula 1, emphasizes that they never concentrated on that undesirable milestone.
Joseph mentioned on the F1 Nation podcast that there was no need to talk about those matters.
"We discuss our strong points, review our driving performance from Friday, and identify potential opportunities."
"We shouldn't focus on issues that others claim exist if we don't perceive them ourselves."
“At the factory, we analyzed the race starts. We expected to uncover something significant. However, it turned out to be not as problematic as people were suggesting.”
"We focus on the aspects we can manage, and the outcomes reflect that."
He commented: "We managed to overcome some challenges."
“It's no longer true that we can't navigate the first corner or take the lead on the first lap.”
"We were in the lead from the beginning and executed everything perfectly."
The McLaren driver's near-flawless weekend in Singapore was marred only by a momentary brush with the barriers.
Joseph disclosed how those within McLaren's garage responded.
"When Lando mentioned that he collided with the wall, we followed our standard protocol to inspect everything," he stated.
"Your goal is to determine if there's a puncture or if the front wing has been damaged."
"If other parts are broken, there's little you can do. If the front wing is damaged, you can halt and replace it."
“You’re attempting to evaluate the situation rapidly.
"The extent of the damage did not warrant any action."
"When we pulled over, we had already determined that no adjustments were necessary for the front wing."
"Did it impact performance? To a minimal extent. Upon review, we noticed the data was slightly marred. There was some pressure loss. However, it was minor, in my opinion."
Joseph recapped Norris' victory in Singapore: "He performed excellently. From the very first lap, we maintained strong speed. Lando showed his impressive quickness."
“We attempted incremental improvements to enhance the car's speed. His performance has been outstanding.
"During the race, we discussed the possibility of two different outcomes. Early on, it became evident that we could accelerate and create a significant lead. Neither of us anticipated that the lead would be this substantial."
"We opened up a window for the Safety Car and then created an opportunity for a pit stop."
"The speed was incredible. We were amazed at how fast it was."
