Lando Norris Cautions McLaren of Ferrari’s Pace Despite Leading in Singapore Practice
Lando Norris Sends Alert to McLaren Despite Positive Outlook in Singapore
"I had anticipated a larger lead than what we achieved, which indicates their speed."
Lando Norris has acknowledged his expectation of a significantly larger lead over Charles Leclerc after an impressive performance during the Friday F1 practice sessions at the Singapore Grand Prix.
Norris led the second practice session, finishing just slightly ahead of Leclerc by a margin of less than 0.1 seconds.
Similar to the situation in Azerbaijan, it appears that the competition for the top spot will primarily involve McLaren and Ferrari.
Reflecting on the day's events, Norris expressed satisfaction with McLaren's performance, yet he wished for a larger lead.
"Speed is satisfactory. I'm in a good state," Norris commented. "Additionally, the lap went well. It seems we're achieving our aim of leading alongside Ferrari.
"The lap was quite impressive. Charles is just 0.08 seconds back. To be honest, I was expecting a significantly larger margin, indicating they're fast."
"Ferrari vehicles are incredibly speedy. So far, everything is proceeding smoothly."
Norris immediately felt comfortable with the way his McLaren was performing.
He further mentioned, "Right from the start, I shared with the entire team how positive the experience felt. In my view, we excel in this aspect – starting off strong is definitely one of our strong points. However, our challenge lies in not advancing as significantly as other teams do."
"Let's wait and see. The outcome could be tight. We're in a fairly good spot. I believe there isn't much we can do differently."
"We're simply aiming to refine a few aspects, smooth out some issues, and nudge it towards a somewhat faster pace. That's about all we're capable of doing."
Norris isn't taken aback by Ferrari's sudden increase in speed, especially when Leclerc is behind the wheel.
Leclerc clinched the pole position and emerged victorious in Monaco, proving to be the fastest driver on the track in Azerbaijan.
Despite a promising beginning, McLaren cautioned that his top performance didn't have much room for improvement in terms of lap speed.
"He excels on city tracks," he elaborated. "His performances in Baku and Monaco have showcased his skills. I believe he's quite satisfied with his lap time. If he isn't, then there's reason to be concerned about tomorrow. As for me, it was a decent lap, couldn't have squeezed much more out of it. I think I made the most of Friday."
"Usually, I like to not excel too much, but rather have a little more to give on Saturday. It's a positive beginning to the weekend. We're in a favorable position. If we manage to maintain this, I'll be pleased."
