JuiceBox Dilemma: The Uncertain Future of Smart EV Chargers Amid Enel X’s Abrupt US Exit
Could JuiceBox electric vehicle chargers become obsolete as the company neglects maintenance?
Those accustomed to using intelligent EV charging systems, particularly one of the top-selling models in America, may need to consider alternative charging methods in the near future.
At the beginning of this month, the company Enel X, which supplies electric vehicle charging solutions, informed its American customer base, users of its intelligent charging devices such as the JuiceBox series, that it would be ceasing its charging station operations in the U.S. within a span of nine days.
This could signify the cessation of continuous updates for its intelligent charging devices, which depend on Enel's server operations. As a result, the advanced chargers that customers invested extra money in could effectively be downgraded to simple chargers, limited to fundamental operations. While they may still operate as charging units, the advanced connectivity features that attracted purchasers would be lost. The ability to start charging through a mobile phone, including at one's residence, or to observe the charging process through the application would be lost, as these functions rely on the firm's server connectivity.
The decision caused a stir throughout the electric vehicle industry, raising critical inquiries that have not been fully considered beyond the often-ignored fine print of user agreements. The key question is the duration of responsibility for tech companies to provide support for their intelligent, interconnected products. Moreover, the implications of a leading EV charger, endorsed by industry specialists and backed by car manufacturers and charging initiatives, becoming unusable overnight due to the discontinuation of the manufacturer's support, are yet to be determined.
The JuiceBox charging unit by eMotorWerks, designed for mounting on the wall, is
Products rendered unusable and insufficient safeguards for buyers
The problem began to gain attention prior to the JuiceBox debacle, with concentrated action in the nation's capital. A month ago, a coalition of advocacy organizations championing repair rights, financial fairness, and ecological concerns addressed the issue of gadgets reliant on proprietary technology and infrastructure in a correspondence to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in the United States.
At the time, the items highlighted predominantly originated from a string of unsuccessful business ventures. These included an interactive baby cot, a precision cooking device, a juice extractor, and an intelligent power socket. Additionally, Amazon's Halo fitness trackers and Google's Dropcam surveillance equipment were cited as examples of devices that became obsolete due to an unexpectedly brief period of manufacturer support.
Now, with Enel's rapid exit from the market, we're faced with yet another prominent instance – possibly involving an electrician's fee in the thousands and maybe even public subsidies.
Similarly, JuiceBox intelligent charging stations, priced between $600 and $1,600, are not the latest offering from a fledgling enterprise but rather from a colossal international corporation. These updates are issued by Enel X Way USA LLC, a subsidiary of the colossal Italian energy corporation Enel, ranked as the 59th biggest firm globally by the Fortune Global 500.
An announcement by Liquid Asset Partners, the company to which Enel refers JuiceBox users as of this Thursday, indicates that approximately 120,000 home-based users, primarily of JuiceBox chargers, alongside 25,000 business clients and an extra 17,000 JuiceBox chargers are in need of a new software service contract. This requirement is being presented as a potential opportunity.
On Thursday, the organizations Consumer Reports and U.S. PIRG, who previously co-authored a letter to the FTC, along with a group of 60 JuiceBox charger users, officially requested that the FTC look into the actions of Enel X.
Glitch in Enel Application – 11th October 2024
Following the FTC's correspondence, Enel reassured customers that their chargers would not be abruptly deactivated, although as of Friday, GCR observed otherwise. Nonetheless, the long-term outlook for these chargers is still unclear.
Enel X Way USA is still worai-allcreator.com">king with an outside company to oversee the company's shutdown on October 11, 2024,” Enel X Way announced in an emailed notice sent to subscribers (including the reporter) on October 10. “Upon additional technical assessment, the company has reached a deal with the existing service provider to prolong the operation of the EV charging system software in the United States and Canada.”
The firm has yet again failed to provide a definitive timeline for its support window, however, it seems that customers will continue to have access to their connected-charger features for several weeks after October 11th.
Green Car Reports has contacted Enel to get more details on the duration of complete functionality once the current server problems are resolved. Enel informed owners on Thursday night that they would maintain the electric vehicle charging software in North America for a prolonged timeframe, describing the action as a temporary fix.
The company announced on Thursday that although JuiceBox items will still function and connect to software past October 11, 2024, there will be no customer support offered in that time frame. After this date, they mentioned that a separate entity will be responsible for handling any claims and correspondence.
eMotorwerks' JuiceBox Pro 40, a connected residential electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), serves as a charging hub for electric cars.
This isn't just any electric vehicle charger; it's highly rated and widely used.
The JuiceBox chargers were pioneers in the smart EV charging technology, initially offering a user experience that could compete with Tesla's acclaimed charging stations. Its compatibility and, at one time, its regularly updated mobile application have made the JuiceBox a popular choice for time-of-use charging initiatives and companies interested in monitoring their energy consumption.
In 2017, Enel acquired eMotorWerks, the California-based company behind JuiceBox charging units. By 2020, these chargers received a design update, although their operational features and user interface remained largely unchanged. However, subsequent changes in the company's software and multiple updates to their mobile application have resulted in a less responsive and less functional app experience for users compared to earlier versions.
The decision of Enel X to withdraw from the market raises questions, particularly as it coincides closely with the NHTSA's disclosure. Documents submitted by the NHTSA a day following Enel X's declaration to depart from the U.S. market indicate an ongoing investigation into the JuiceBox home charging units due to instances of electrical sparks and overheating. The inquiry includes six verified occurrences, two of which resulted in fires.
Navigating this issue might prove to be quite intricate. Tom Moloughney, who specializes in electric vehicle (EV) charging and contributes to GCR, highlights in his latest State of Charge podcast episode (as seen below) that Enel X is possibly second only to ChargePoint in the number of commercial Level 2 charging units operational in North America.
In a recent podcast episode, Michael Bakumin, the CEO of Chargelab, highlighted an important issue for owners of Enel X's residential and commercial charging units. He emphasized that these chargers are not built on the widely-used Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP), which is akin to an "open source" communication standard for charging equipment. This standard promotes flexibility, allowing chargers to be adapted easily for different networks and interfaces. Although Chargelab has managed to update commercial chargers, the potential withdrawal of Enel's support could pose significant challenges. For example, reconfiguring each charger can take between 15 to 30 minutes, which means a building with 20 Level 2 chargers could incur a full day's worth of expenses for specialized technical labor.
The process is overly complex for home charging setups, thus maintaining a software agreement stands as the most viable option. However, with no clear schedule provided in Friday's announcement, it appears we have not reached that point.
Tesla's All-Purpose Wall Charger
There are numerous inquiries regarding the reliance of electric vehicles on network and cloud technology. Essentially, the industry is evolving. Almost every leading car manufacturer is currently promoting their bespoke smart-charging and home-energy devices, or they are recommending a smart-charging solution that works seamlessly with their proprietary application.
A sophisticated charging device might not be essential, since numerous electric vehicles allow you to schedule charging sessions and adjust power settings directly through the vehicle. This approach could prove more reliable than relying on external network servers or cloud-based information.
The situation raises the issue of whether Enel is indebted to the U.S. federal or state governments due to the premature reduction of its support for the chargers, considering that a significant portion of these were purchased with the aid of public funds or were integrated into governmental initiatives.
The letter from the FTC in September concluded that, typically, consumers are left with an unusable piece of electronic garbage that could have been operational with appropriate software, along with a feeling of letdown.
The groups involved called for a commitment to a set minimum duration of assistance for internet-enabled devices, an assurance that the devices will remain operational in the absence of internet access or updates, strategies for repurposing devices once support is discontinued, resources to facilitate compatibility between different systems, and initiatives aimed at increasing the lifespan of products.
Electrify America's Home Charging Station for Electric Cars
Naturally, this leaves out considerations of cybersecurity and the potential for a lack of support for intelligent charging systems to increase their susceptibility to hacking.
In an effort to tackle various issues related to safety, ease of use, and effectiveness for the foreseeable future, an organization known as Juice Rescue is pushing for the firm to make its charging stations' source code available to the public.
Currently, this situation presents a discouraging setback for intelligent charging systems along with its numerous benefits. The Department of Energy has highlighted that this technology helps to balance the load on the power grid, enhances the environmental friendliness of electric vehicles, and generally simplifies the experience of using EVs.
In conclusion, scheduling your electric vehicle's charging times to align with your utility provider's high and low rate periods is beneficial. However, it's worth reevaluating the necessity of having your charger connected to the cloud, even for scheduled charging. Above all, prioritize investing in a smart charging device that adheres to Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) standards to ensure it remains operational, regardless of the manufacturer's future status or discontinuation of support services.

Trump Administration Targets EV Tax Credit Cut with Tesla’s Surprising Support
According to a recent Reuters article, the Trump administration plans to focus on scrapping the federal electric vehicle (EV) tax incentive, valued at $7,500. Notably, this initiative is backed by electric car manufacturer Tesla.
The possibility of scrapping the electric vehicle tax incentive is on the table for Trump's incoming administration, as they consider various tax-related policies, reports claim, pointing to two unnamed individuals with knowledge of the discussions. The incoming team reportedly sees the removal of the electric vehicle tax credit as a low-hanging fruit likely to pass without issue in a Republican-led Congress. The report also highlights that, with massive tax reductions approaching their end at the beginning of Trump's presidency, finding budget offsets is a priority.
2025 Model of Nissan Leaf
According to information provided to Reuters by two informants, Tesla's envoys have communicated to a team assisting with President Trump's transition into office that they are in favor of discontinuing the electric vehicle tax incentive. Tesla, which holds the title of the top electric vehicle brand in the United States, appears to be wagering that the withdrawal of the tax incentive will impact its rivals, who have not yet solidified their presence in the electric vehicle sector, more severely. This move also aligns Tesla's chief executive, Elon Musk, a vocal advocate for Trump, with the incoming President's stance.
The electric vehicle (EV) tax incentive saw significant changes with the enactment of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) of 2022 during President Biden's term. Starting in 2024, this incentive will be immediately applied at the point of sale rather than through tax returns. However, stricter criteria were introduced, including stipulations about the sourcing of battery elements and essential minerals. There were also new conditions imposed regarding the assembly of vehicles in North America, along with earlier introduced limitations on the cost of eligible vehicles and the income levels of purchasers.
2025 Model of the Lucid Air,
Taking into account the specified procurement conditions, the eligibility for purchase incentives is also influenced by documentation and subtle distinctions in production. Consequently, this has resulted in certain American-manufactured vehicles, such as the Nissan Leaf, intermittently meeting or not meeting the criteria.
The "leasing loophole" is perhaps the most criticized aspect of the tax credit, allowing a $7,500 credit for leased electric vehicles regardless of their manufacturing origin or cost. It is said that Democrats have avoided amending this loophole in the current Congressional session to avoid the possibility of having to reapprove all the credits.

Sneak Peek: Jaguar Teases Next-Gen EV Grand Tourer as Part of Electrified Future Lineup
Jaguar offers sneak peek at upcoming electric vehicle
Jaguar has teased the initial model that it says will kick off an entire range of electric cars from the brand.
On Thursday, the car manufacturer unveiled a sneak peek of their new four-door luxury car, obscured by heavy camouflage. The vehicle boasts a prominent hood and a sleek silhouette reminiscent of a fastback, and it's anticipated to feature a liftgate instead of a traditional trunk at the back. This car is set to be one of three electric vehicles in the upcoming range, alongside a projected SUV and a classic-designed saloon.
Jaguar initially announced the idea of this future electric vehicle last year, and it's anticipated to be unveiled during the 2024 Miami Art Week that begins on December 2. Jaguar has also stated that the final version will be introduced in 2025, and customers can expect deliveries to commence in 2026.
Upcoming Jaguar electric vehicle model preview
Jaguar announced that its electric vehicle (EV) would start at around 100,000 British pounds (roughly $127,000 with current exchange rates) last year, promising that it would be the most powerful Jaguar vehicle designed for street use. Additionally, the company targets a minimum of 430 miles on a single charge according to the European WLTP testing standards, which may equate to over 300 miles as per the EPA's measurement system.
The trio of upcoming electric vehicles from Jaguar is set to feature the North American Charging Standard (NACS) outlets, allowing them to tap into Tesla's Supercharging network. These vehicles will be developed on a distinctive platform known as the Jaguar Electrified Architecture (JEA), which is exclusive to the Jaguar brand and will not be shared with its sister company, Land Rover. Despite this, the manufacturing of these Jaguar models will take place at the JLR group's Solihull facility in the U.K., the same site where Land Rover vehicles are produced.
Upcoming Jaguar Electric Vehicle Model in Testing Phase
Jaguar, a pioneering luxury marque in the electric vehicle market, ventured into this realm with the debut of its I-Pace SUV in 2018. However, the brand has since faced indecision regarding its future direction. Initially, Jaguar aimed to roll out a new electric top-tier saloon in 2021 to succeed its petrol-fueled XJ, alongside plans to enhance the I-Pace with an upgraded version. Ultimately, these plans were abandoned as Jaguar opted for a fresh start strategy.
Currently, Jaguar is ceasing production of most of its existing vehicle range, such as the I-Pace, as it prepares to launch a fresh series of electric vehicles. The F-Pace crossover, which runs on gasoline, is expected to be Jaguar's sole offering until the new models are ready for release, a scenario that Jaguar's managing director, Rawdon Glover, has described as "extremely aggravating."

EV Collision Patterns and Costs: How One-Pedal Driving and High Repair Prices are Shaping the Future of Vehicle Insurance Claims
Data indicates that electric vehicles are frequently part of a varied range of accidents compared to traditional gas-powered vehicles, according to information from Mitchell International. This could be linked to the use of one-pedal driving systems in EVs.
Mitchell, a technology service provider for the automotive insurance and body repair sectors, has earlier disclosed that repair expenses for electric vehicles (EVs) post-collision surpass those for traditional petrol-powered cars. Presently, the firm is investigating the specific nature of minor crashes that EVs are more likely to encounter compared to vehicles with internal combustion engines.
In a recent statement, the firm revealed that according to their statistics, electric vehicles have a greater tendency to be hit from behind compared to traditional vehicles, making up 35.9% of electric vehicle accidents versus 27.5% for those with internal combustion engines. On the other hand, conventional vehicles experience front-end collisions more often, with a rate of 31.5%, while electric vehicles face such incidents at a lower rate of 25.8%.
Upcoming 2025 Electric Kia Niro
Mitchell attributes this to a couple of primary reasons. Firstly, electric vehicles are generally more modern and therefore equipped with updated technology to prevent front-end collisions. Additionally, the firm pointed to the unique braking behavior of EVs when operated in single-pedal mode, potentially leading to quicker stops that trailing drivers may not anticipate.
According to Mitchell, even though head-on crash repairs are typically 40% more expensive compared to rear-end fixes, electric vehicles generally have higher repair costs. Their statistics from the third quarter indicate that in the U.S., the average insurance claim for fixable cars was $5,560 for electric vehicles, $5,229 for plug-in hybrids, $4,426 for mild hybrids, and $4,741 for traditional gas-powered cars without hybrid technology.
The pattern persisted into the second quarter, with Mitchell's data revealing that the expense of fixing electric vehicles after a crash was 20% greater compared to other types of cars. Hertz pointed to steep repair costs as one of the factors causing it to decelerate its electric vehicle initiatives.
2025 Model of BMW i4
The recent analysis by Mitchell suggested a possible reason for the observed trend. It appears that although the proportion of components fixed is roughly equivalent between BEVs and ICEs, the former demands a vast majority of its parts, 90%, to be sourced from the original equipment manufacturer. Conversely, only 64% of parts for ICE vehicles need to come from the OEM, with the remainder being supplied by less expensive aftermarket options.
Electric vehicles and traditional gas-powered vehicles tend to be deemed irreparable at a similar frequency, with both sitting at 9.9% of all insurance claims. When looking at the average market value of electric vehicles labeled as a total loss, it's approximately $32,718, which doesn't differ much from the $31,070 average for gas vehicles from 2021 or later that Mitchell identified as comparable in terms of repair complexity and expenses.
It's widely recognized that fixing electric vehicles (EVs) can be expensive, and recent observations suggest that the unique handling of EVs could be contributing to the number of accidents. Mitchell's reference to the one-pedal driving technique has been linked to an increase in rear-end accidents. Furthermore, a study released the previous month indicated that EV drivers tend to be responsible for accidents more often, highlighting a shift in driving habits when they transition to an EV.

Stellantis Eyes Breakthrough in EV Charging: Boosting 400V Superchargers to 800V Compatibility
Upcoming electric vehicles from Stellantis could support 800V charging using 400V DC fast-charging stations. The company is developing technology to increase the capacity of these lower-powered chargers for EVs capable of accepting the higher power, aiming to keep any additional weight and complexity as low as possible.
Reading between the lines, despite the absence of any reference to Tesla in the patent, the concept has the potential to significantly impact actual charging scenarios. This innovation could enable electric vehicles that operate at 800 volts—such as the soon-to-be-released Ram 1500 REV—to achieve faster charging speeds even when connected to fast-charging stations with less than 800 volts, which includes most of the connectors found in the widespread Tesla Supercharger network.
Stellantis has verified its intention to implement the charging port design initiated by Tesla, known as NACS, which is currently integrated into the standard referred to as SAE J3400, as of February.
Adapter for Rivian's North American Charging Standard
The car manufacturer's suggested enhancement for vehicle power is outlined in a patent application that was made public by the USPTO on October 31, 2024, though it was initially submitted on April 25, 2023. Stellantis claims in the document that the technology is engineered to maximize the charging potential of 800-volt car electrical systems, even while utilizing 400-volt DC rapid charging outlets.
Image of Stellantis' patent for an enhanced DC rapid-charging system
Stellantis highlights in their statement that although specialized DC booster units are available, they come with drawbacks including higher expenses and increased heft, not to mention the challenge of fitting them into designs. Instead, the car manufacturer suggests the implementation of a sequence of relay switches as a voltage amplification method. Stellantis notes that this approach would only require a few extra parts, specifically these switches and a compact DC capacitor, and mentions the potential for this system to be utilized in both plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles.
When using a low-power charging point, the relay switches enable electricity to pass through the car's inverter and electric motor while it charges, creating two AC phase currents. These currents can then be transformed into a more potent DC current, which is subsequently directed into the vehicle's battery.
Image of Stellantis' patented DC rapid-charging enhancement system
The functionality may not be pertinent for a wide range of models just yet. Stellantis is opting to maintain a 400-volt framework for the majority of its forthcoming electric vehicles that will be constructed based on the STLA platform plan, which is expected to be the foundation for the 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona and 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S. However, it has been verified that the large Ram electric vehicles will have the capacity to charge at 800 volts.
Stellantis has concentrated its efforts on making charging equipment more efficient. The car manufacturer announced in 2023 its intention to eliminate onboard chargers and inverters to make upcoming electric vehicles less complex.

Revolution auf Rädern: Lamborghini’s Vision für 2025 – Neue Modelle und persönliche Einblicke
To enhance the intimacy of your experience
Lamborghini: A Glimpse at What's Coming in 2025
The brand symbolized by the bull has been bustling with new releases recently. The focus now shifts to what the future holds…
Lamborghini has been on a streak of groundbreaking releases. Over the past year and a half, the company has unveiled three fresh models, ranging from the Urus SE Plug-in Hybrid to the Revuelto. And not long ago, the Temerario made its debut. With such a revamped lineup, anticipating major revelations for 2025 might be challenging. However, with Lamborghini, there's always something brewing…
The Lamborghini Revuelto is likely to get an even more powerful iteration, as indicated by the addition of the SVJ (Super Fast Jota) designation. This is a pattern observed with its predecessor, the Aventador, which also received an enhanced SVJ variant a few years after its initial release.
Lamborghini's Latest Model
Although Lamborghini has not officially confirmed this, it wouldn't be shocking to see them unveil a special edition model in 2025. Enhancing the performance of the already powerful base Revuelto, which boasts 1,015 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.5 seconds, is no small feat. However, by fine-tuning the V12 and updating the control software for the three electric motors, it's possible that they could raise the bar even higher in terms of power.
Outlook
Let's delve further into the realm of speculation (or dreams, if you will): Imagine if Lamborghini was crafting an even more exaggerated version of the Urus. And consider the possibility that the 4.0-liter V8 engine has untapped potential, which could be harnessed in a limited edition model surpassing the SE's 800 horsepower. We might catch a glimpse of this preview between late 2025 and early 2026, but remember, this is unconfirmed speculation.
The prospect of learning more about the Lanzador is considerably more challenging. This will be Lamborghini's inaugural electric model, anticipated to debut in 2028. With three years still to go, it's possible that additional details might emerge by the latter part of 2026.

Der Audi Q6 Sportback e-tron (2024): Eine persönliche Erfahrung von Technik und Design
To enhance the intimacy of your experience
Exploring the Interior of the 2024 Audi Q6 Sportback e-tron in Detail
This model isn't just about advanced technology…
According to the manufacturer, the Audi Q6 Sportback e-tron is designed to deliver both sportiness and efficiency in equal measure. The model with the sleeker rear design of this large electric SUV offers a more dynamic look and slightly more driving range compared to the traditional body style version. But does this unique roof shape affect the interior space? Let's discover…
Control Panel and Dashboard
The Q6 Sportback e-tron features an abundantly equipped control panel with advanced technology. As a result, the dashboard houses no fewer than three screens.
The vehicle features a 11.9-inch integrated instrument cluster, a 14.5-inch infotainment screen, and an optional 10.9-inch display for the passenger that can show driving data or streaming content.
All screens feature high-resolution OLED technology, and the passenger screen becomes "invisible" to the driver while on the move to prevent distractions. Additionally, there is an augmented reality head-up display that beams navigation directions and essential driving details directly into the driver's line of sight.
Interior Composition and Components
Inside the Audi, faux leather graces prominent areas including door panels and the dashboard, complemented by microfiber and cloth trims as well as a glossy piano black finish. The car also boasts an interior lighting system that illuminates the entire front cabin and extends into the rear doors.

Interior Space and Cargo Capacity
The sloped roofline of the Q6 e-tron, when compared to the standard model, reduces the headroom for rear-seat passengers slightly but doesn't significantly affect the overall space. The middle seat might be less comfortable due to the protruding center tunnel and smaller backrest. However, there's ample legroom, thanks to the vehicle's substantial wheelbase measuring 2.89 meters. The trunk offers a minimum volume of 511 liters, which can expand to a maximum of 1,373 liters, in addition to a 64-liter storage area in the front.

To enhance a more individual experience
The BMW 5 Series, also known as the i5, has been named the German Car of the Year for 2025. A panel composed of 40 experts crowned the series as the top new release of the year. The selection was made by a group of German and international automotive journalists who found the BMW 5 Series to be superior to competitors across all categories.
The award was received at the BMW Welt by Jochen Goller, a board member of BMW AG responsible for Customer, Brands, and Sales. Goller reflected on the outcome, stating, "The selection of the new BMW 5 Series as the German Car of the Year further validates our customer-focused product strategy. We offer the new BMW 5 Series as fully electric models, with plug-in hybrid systems, and with highly efficient combustion engines, allowing us to adapt flexibly to our customers' evolving preferences."

The champion was selected from among the five category winners: the Citroën C3 (Compact – up to €35,000 entry price), BMW 5 Series (Premium – up to €70,000 entry price), Cadillac Lyriq (Luxury – above €70,000 entry price), Audi Q6 e-tron (New Energy – alternative powertrains), and Porsche 911 GTS T-Hybrid (Performance). The category winners were chosen by a panel of judges from all significant new vehicles that have hit the German market since 2023/24.
The accolade "German Car of the Year" (GCOTY) has been presented for the seventh time this year. Initially, the judges had selected the new BMW 5 Series as the class winner in the "Premium" category. Following thorough test drives and evaluations against the top contenders across four other competition categories, the panel concluded to crown the new BMW 5 Series as the overall winner of the "German Car of the Year" Award for 2025.

Breaking the streak of six consecutive electric vehicles, the BMW 5 Series emerges as the first in a line of technology-inclusive models: The Jaguar I-Pace clinched the victory for GCOTY 2019, followed by the Porsche Taycan in 2020, the Honda e in 2021, and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 in 2022. In 2023, the Volkswagen ID. Buzz grabbed the top spot, with the Volkswagen ID.7 taking the lead in 2024.
The panel for the "German Car of the Year" award is comprised of over 30 motor journalists who are active in German-speaking areas, including the author of this piece. Additionally, about 10 international guest judges participated in the voting. The award is backed by the consulting firm Aitastic and companies such as Alcantara, AutoCom Associates, Bridgestone, Gentex, KST Motorenversuch, and ZF Friedrichshafen. Audi’s Tailored Approach: The Extended A5L for China and the Q6L e-tron’s Market-Specific Innovations
For a more personalized experience
At the Guangzhou event, Audi unveiled the all-caps AUDI and a Q6L e-tron…
Some die-hard fans of the traditional sedan might feel nostalgic as the successor to the Audi A4, now renamed A5, retains the sedan design. However, it now sports a liftback with a large rear hatch, reminiscent of the previous A5 Sportback. In contrast, the Chinese market was introduced to the A5L, an extended version of the new A5.
What's peculiar is that the latest A5L model features a sedan-style trunk, whereas its European counterpart is designed with a hatchback. Audi hasn't been very forthcoming with information about the extended A5, particularly regarding its size specifications. The A5L adheres to Audi's updated global naming system, which differentiates between electric models and traditional series. As a combustion engine vehicle, the A5L is built on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC).
Audi A5L Released for the Chinese Market

Official statements simply say that its extended wheelbase provides an even more significantly enhanced sense of space "while maintaining familiar dynamic proportions". The A5L measures at 4,902 millimeters in length, making it over eight centimeters longer than the standard A5. Unique designs at the front and rear, such as the illuminated rings, ensure a distinctive presence. Inside, there are features like illuminated door sills, and Audi mentions "high-tech solutions in the display and operating concept".
Just before its launch into the market, the Audi Q6L e-tron debuts as the initial locally manufactured model on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE). Starting from the end of December, it will be exclusively produced for the Chinese market by the Audi FAW NEV Company, a joint venture established by Audi and FAW. To facilitate this, the collaborative enterprise has constructed a new production facility in Changchun dedicated to the manufacturing of fully electric Audi vehicles.

Audi's Q6L e-tron stands out from its global counterpart produced in Ingolstadt not only due to its traditionally elongated wheelbase but also because of the numerous design features and market-specific innovations tailored for the Chinese audience. The Q6L e-tron's interior, making its debut, features a digital experience uniquely developed for the Chinese market. The cabin of the Audi Q6L e-tron has been designed with a stronger focus than ever on meeting the preferences and needs of customers in China.

The concept for an electric AUD
The German manufacturers are no longer thriving in the Chinese market, which is why Audi is planning to reinvent itself in the region. The AUDI E concept car was showcased to a large audience for the first time in Guangzhou. This vehicle is the initial concept model resulting from the expanded collaboration between Audi and SAIC, which was first introduced on November 7, 2024, in Shanghai.
The concept study closely resembling production models previews three upcoming AUDI series vehicles, set to launch in 2025 in collaboration with SAIC. Fermín Soneira, who has extensive experience overseeing Audi's electric vehicle series, is in charge of this joint venture. The AUDI E concept is unveiled as a Sportback measuring 4.87 meters in length and 1.99 meters in width. It is equipped with two electric motors delivering 570 kW and features the renowned quattro all-wheel-drive system, promising exceptional driving dynamics.

US on Track to Eclipse China in EV Battery Production by 2030 with Aid of Federal Tax Credits, Report Finds
Study Suggests Potential for US to Surpass China in Cost-Effective EV Battery Production by 2030
A study by Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, reported by Politico, indicates that the United States has the potential to surpass China in producing more affordable electric vehicle batteries by the end of the decade. However, this is contingent upon the continuation of supportive policies from the Biden administration that are currently bolstering the battery production industry.
According to the study, the decrease in expenses relies on the tax incentives provided by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). The report by Benchmark highlights that the 2022 law has already prompted a significant increase in battery-related investments. It provides a manufacturing tax credit that can reach $35 per kilowatt-hour for battery cells produced domestically, available until the year 2029.
Considering the impact of tax incentives, analysts predict that the typical expense for manufacturing batteries in the U.S. at the cell level might drop from the current $118 per kwh to $76.8 per kwh by the year 2029. This reduction could position American battery production facilities as the "most cost-effective worldwide," potentially overturning China's present price lead and possibly increasing the volume of exports from American factories.
Visualization of the proposed General Motors Ultium Cells battery facility in Lansing
The critical factor in this situation hinges on whether the Trump administration that's coming in will maintain the allocation of budget for tax credits related to battery production. While the IRA might have generated sufficient employment to prevent its complete termination, the new government might exercise its legislative discretionary authority to withhold subsidies for batteries. During the campaign, there were reports of Trump proposing to eliminate electric vehicle benefits in exchange for a substantial contribution from the major oil companies.
Despite the preservation of tax incentives, the path to more affordable electric vehicle batteries in the United States encounters further challenges. The study pointed out that there's a possibility of companies scrapping their plans if the uptake of electric vehicles doesn't accelerate as anticipated. Since the introduction of the Inflation Reduction Act in August 2022, there have been proposals for 23 additional battery manufacturing facilities, potentially raising the total to 40 across the nation. However, research indicates that construction has yet to start on more than one-third of these proposed facilities.
According to the study, it typically takes 30 months to build new battery plants in North America, whereas in China, it only takes 20 months. Experts point out that the presence of unions and the limited availability of processed materials for batteries contribute to higher production costs in the United States compared to China. However, it's anticipated that costs will decrease once these facilities become operational.
Illustration depicting Ford's industrial facility in Tennessee, unveiled in September 2021.
The report highlighted that the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) is enhancing the economic argument for manufacturing batteries domestically in the United States. LG Energy Solution earlier acknowledged that due to the IRA tax incentives, their operational earnings shifted from a deficit of 235 billion won (around $180 million with the present exchange rate) to a gain of 195 billion won ($138 million) in the second quarter. Additionally, Panasonic observed a boost in its profit margin from 7% to 18% for the financial year concluding in 2024, attributing the increase to the tax credits.
More affordable batteries lead to lower-priced vehicles, potentially influencing the widespread uptake of electric vehicles (EVs) more significantly than tax incentives for buying such cars. A study conducted by the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR) suggests that although tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) contribute to reduced emissions and increased domestic production, they often benefit individuals who were already likely to purchase an EV, casting doubt on their overall worth.

Tesla Cybertruck Hit by Sixth Recall Over Drive Power Loss Risk
The electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla is issuing another recall for its Cybertruck model, the sixth since its launch, due to a problem that may result in the vehicle unexpectedly losing its ability to drive.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced a recall affecting 2,431 vehicles due to a possible defect in the trucks' inverters, which may lead to a sudden loss of power to the wheels.
2025 edition of the Tesla Cybertruck, presented by Tesla, Inc.
There is no advance alert before the torque cuts out, but once it does, motorists will be notified via a dashboard alert to find a secure spot to stop, the agency noted. Additionally, if the accelerator pedal stops responding, it could signal an issue.
Tesla approximates that a mere fraction, specifically 1%, of the cars involved in the recall may possess the defect, which has led to a total of five warranty claims by Oct. 30. The car manufacturer has informed the NHTSA that it has no knowledge of any accidents, deaths, or harm resulting from the issue at hand.

Tesla has managed to solve many problems through remote updates, eliminating the need for in-person service center visits. However, this particular issue requires a physical fix—the inverter must be replaced, a service that Tesla will provide at no cost. Tesla plans to send letters to vehicle owners on January 4, 2025, to inform them of this recall. For additional details, owners can reach out to Tesla's customer support at 1-877-798-3752. The recall is officially listed under the reference number SB-24-40-009.
In the last 11 months, the Cybertruck has been subject to five separate recalls. The issues leading to these recalls varied, including defective wiper motors, improperly secured trim, accelerator pedals that were getting stuck, and rearview cameras that had problems with delayed images.

Polestar 3 Revamp: Cheaper, Longer-Range RWD Model Joins 2025 Lineup
The price of the 2025 Polestar 3 has been reduced thanks to the introduction of a new model that features a single motor and rear-wheel drive.
Polestar's online configurator now features the option to select a rear-wheel-drive system, reducing the starting price of the Polestar 3 to $68,900, in addition to a $1,400 delivery fee. This is a decrease from the former starting price of $74,800 which was the only price available when the model was solely offered with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration.
Upcoming 2025 Polestar 3
When the front motor is removed, the power output decreases to 299 horsepower, in contrast to the 489 horsepower of the typical dual-motor model 3, and 517 horsepower if equipped with the extra Performance Pack. However, this boosts the estimated range to 350 miles according to the EPA, which is more than the 315-mile range of the regular dual-motor version and the 279 miles achieved with the Performance Pack. Regardless of the configuration, all models are equipped with an identical 111-kWh battery pack.
Even with its reduced cost, the one-motor variant of the Polestar 3 comes with comparable features to its two-motor counterpart. The package comprises 20-inch rims, Brembo braking systems, temperature-controlled side view mirrors, LED illumination, an automated rear hatch, and Polestar's array of driving support tools known as the Pilot Pack. This array encompasses a 360-degree camera setup, alerts for traffic crossing, and the Pilot Assist system for navigation on motorways.
Upcoming 2025 Polestar 3
The Polestar 3, constructed in South Carolina, commenced its deliveries within the U.S. this month, following postponements due to software issues. Sharing its foundation with the Volvo EX90 produced at the same facility, the Polestar 3 differentiates by providing only two rows of seating in contrast to the Volvo's three, and targets a more athletic appeal.
Polestar has made a shift in strategy for the pricing and options of its existing model on offer in the U.S. market. The 2025 iteration of the Polestar 2 will no longer feature the single-motor variant, instead offering just one comprehensive trim with a price tag of $66,200—significantly higher than the former starting price of $51,300 for the single-motor version. However, Polestar has indicated to Green Car Reports its dedication to maintaining a trio of models in the U.S., comprising the Polestar 2, Polestar 3, and the newly introduced Polestar 4, a coupe-style SUV set to debut in 2025.

Automakers Urged to Strategically Pivot for Mainstream EV Adoption Within a Decade, Accenture Study Reveals
Research: Major Shift Needed for Car Makers to Achieve 57% Electric Vehicle Sales by 2031
To significantly increase worldwide sales of electric vehicles within the next decade, car manufacturers must shift their target from early technology enthusiasts to the average consumer, according to recent research by consultancy giant Accenture.
Research forecasts a significant shift towards electric vehicles (EVs), with over half, specifically 57%, of motorists anticipated to make the switch in the coming decade. Furthermore, nearly half, or 43% of those currently driving non-electric vehicles, are contemplating an EV for their forthcoming car acquisition. The report, which draws from a pool of 6,000 prospective car purchasers from nations including the U.S., China, Italy, Germany, France, and Japan, reveals that 47% of these drivers firmly believe electric vehicles are the wave of the future.
The rise in electric vehicle (EV) sales is not as rapid as before. A study highlighted that the worldwide sales of EVs rose by 35% in 2023, which marks a decrease from the 55% growth in 2022 and a significant drop from the 121% surge in 2021. Despite the slowdown, this growth is impressive considering the post-pandemic recovery period in the previous two years. However, experts suggest that car manufacturers must rethink their strategies to boost the sales of EVs further.
The 2024 version of the Tesla Model S, presented by Tesla, Inc.
Accenture suggests that while highlighting technological advancements has successfully garnered the interest of initial consumers, car manufacturers should shift their attention to the everyday needs of the average purchaser. They point out that most individuals looking to buy a vehicle (80%) place importance on the car's dependability, security, and cost-effectiveness. Therefore, these are the aspects that should be emphasized by automakers, according to the company.
Accenture put together detailed personality assessments for various possible electric vehicle purchasers. The "Strategist" and "Individualist" categories prioritize aspects such as high-end features and advanced tech. In contrast, the "Carer" regards vehicles simply as instruments, the "Conservative" focuses on dependability, and the cost-conscious "Frugal" consumer waits to transition to an EV until the price is right.
2025 Model of Volkswagen ID.4
Additional research has echoed the trend of waning enthusiasm for electric vehicles. According to a Gallup survey conducted the previous year, the number of Americans desiring to own an EV has dropped compared to the year before. Furthermore, a J.D. Power study from 2023 indicates that the uptake of EVs in the U.S. is increasingly divided along state lines.
Over ten years ago, when individuals were shelling out close to $40,000 for early electric vehicles like the Nissan Leaf that couldn't even hit a 100-mile range, it became clear that these initial EV enthusiasts were a breed apart from the average car consumer in numerous ways. If car manufacturers are genuinely committed to boosting their electric vehicle market, they should pay attention to the priorities of the typical buyer, which revolve around affordability and functionality.
