Joan Mir Sticks with Honda Amid Career Challenges, Nakagami’s Future in Jeopardy as Honda Eyes Young Talent
Joan Mir lacks a superior alternative | Honda may cut ties with Takaaki Nakagami?
"The truth is, that's the gamble one embraces upon joining Honda."
Joan Mir has been informed that despite Honda's dismal showing, it remains his top option for a career in MotoGP.
Mir is anticipated to continue his association with Repsol Honda by securing a fresh contract for the upcoming season and future ones.
He has already expressed grievances and openly discussed retirement after transitioning from Suzuki to Honda in 2023.
"Truthfully, he's lacking a superior alternative," Neil Hodgson of TNT Sports conveyed to Mir.
"That's the truth. It's the gamble you accept once you commit to Honda.
"It has become evident in the last four or five years that it puts a halt to your professional progression."
Luca Marini, his latest teammate, has secured a lengthy contract; however, his inaugural season as a factory rider has turned out to be extremely challenging.
Marini has consistently found himself at the rear of the group.
Mir has managed to avoid falling as frequently as he did last year, yet he still struggles to unleash his motorcycle's full potential.
Possible Break for Takaaki Nakagami?
On another note, within LCR Honda, while Johann Zarco has a contract extending into the following year, his colleague Takaaki Nakagaki's tenure is yet to be secured.
Honda is said to be keen on maintaining Japanese representation in their lineup of riders. However, Ai Ogura, emerging from Moto2, poses a challenge to Nakagami's position.
Last season, Ogura was considered unprepared, yet this season, he has shown significantly more confident displays.
However, Hodgson is skeptical about Ogura's readiness to advance to MotoGP at this point.
"Hodgson mentioned in Assen, 'He was unyielding.' I questioned him further, and he asserted, 'I'll only leave if I clinch the Moto2 title.'"
Sylvain Guintoli remarked, "The opportunity to ride will come eventually. It's preferable to remain in Moto2 and secure the championship title."
Hodgson stated, "I suppose his expectation is that by delaying for another year, there might be an opportunity to enhance the motorcycle."
Guintoli mentioned, "Or it might take a couple of years to implement a rule change. However, that's quite a lengthy period."
