Hulkenberg’s Heroic Defense: Haas Driver Fends Off Red Bull to Secure Crucial Points at Singapore GP
"I don't mind if it's a Red Bull," says F1's master of defensive driving. "It doesn't matter if it's a Red Bull or anyone else; what matters is that we earn those points."
Nico Hulkenberg from Haas earned points in the F1 Singapore Grand Prix by bravely holding off a Red Bull car during the final moments of the race.
Hulkenberg's impressive defensive skills throughout the season have bolstered his reputation for consistently exceeding expectations.
Hulkenberg secured a ninth-place finish in Singapore. He initially passed McLaren's Oscar Piastri but eventually lost the spot. Hulkenberg also managed to hold off Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso for a while but ultimately lost ground due to a pit stop.
However, the most crucial aspect was that he managed to fend off Sergio Perez from Red Bull during the final moments.
The experienced driver shared, "We succeeded and positioned ourselves well with the qualifying. I had a strong start and a smooth race."
"It doesn't matter if it's Red Bull or another team; securing those points is crucial."
He expressed his satisfaction, stating, “What’s important is earning points, and I’m clearly pleased about that.”
"Considering that perspective, it was positive. There are some strategic aspects that need to be examined and reviewed, but overall, it was a smooth race."
"[There wasn't] much happening, but it was tense trying to hold off the Red Bull throughout the entire second part of the race.
"Handling the tires and everything else made it challenging, but we succeeded. I'm very happy and feel it's a bit of redemption from last week."
Last year, Haas ended up at the bottom of the constructors' championship, but they have been rejuvenated under the guidance of Ayao Komatsu.
Nico Hulkenberg's sixth time scoring points this year has secured him a transfer to Sauber for the 2025 season.
At 37 years old, the German driver will lead Audi's debut in Formula 1 in 2026.
Next year, the Haas team will team up newcomer Ollie Bearman with Esteban Ocon.
Kevin Magnussen, who came back after serving a one-race suspension in Singapore, is set to depart from his Formula 1 position in 2025.
Magnussen exited the Singapore Grand Prix due to a flat tire.
Magnussen explained that their approach was to extend their stint and anticipate a safety car appearing in the middle phase, but that scenario did not unfold.
"Naturally, we had to end it early since our performance on the hard tires was too sluggish, and then I experienced a puncture."
"Recently, our speed has been impressive. Our car is performing well. We anticipate an upgrade for the next race, and we're excited about the upcoming races for the remainder of the season."
