Horner’s Russell Remarks: A Strategic Move to Ruffle Wolff’s Feathers, Says Rosberg
Christian Horner aims to ruffle Toto Wolff's feathers by hinting at interest in George Russell
Nico Rosberg evaluates speculation around Red Bull potentially eyeing George Russell
Christian Horner's statements regarding monitoring George Russell as a potential candidate for a Red Bull seat were aimed at provoking Toto Wolff.
Nico Rosberg expressed skepticism, doubting the sincerity of the Red Bull team principal's statements.
During discussions about potential driver choices, Horner mentioned, "We're open to exploring options beyond our current roster. George Russell's contract is up for renewal after next year ends.
"Ignoring that aspect would be unwise."
Throughout this season, Sergio Perez has faced significant pressure as a teammate to Max Verstappen.
At Red Bull's affiliate team, RB will substitute Daniel Ricciardo with Liam Lawson for the remainder of the season.
Jamie Chadwick expressed to Sky Sports, “His reference to George indicates a lack of complete confidence in his four drivers, which is understandable.
"Checo must elevate his performance. Their chances of winning the constructors' championship are in jeopardy due to their second driver's shortcomings."
"Liam Lawson will be tested in the [RB] vehicle to assess his readiness for a major role."
"Consider exploring within their current roster or seeking external candidates for additional drivers."
Former Mercedes racer Rosberg remarked, "It's about tactics and strategy too, as he aims to disconcert Toto."
"If Toto unexpectedly overhears Horner mentioning Russell, and Russell is not currently under contract, Toto could consider 'is it time to pursue a deal with George?'"
"It's disconcerting. It's an aspect of the game."
Next season, when Lewis Hamilton departs for Ferrari, Russell will step up as Mercedes' lead driver, with newcomer Kimi Antonelli filling the vacancy left behind.
Red Bull's challenges with their drivers largely focus on Perez.
Despite deciding against making any adjustments midway through the season, Perez's 10th-place finish in Singapore the previous weekend provided McLaren with a crucial chance to move forward in the constructors' standings.
"Max truly excelled once more over the past weekend. This has significantly widened the gap," Rosberg commented.
"The Red Bull vehicle is struggling, and the Singapore circuit is the most challenging for it."
"He truly needs to make some strides forward. Otherwise, they'll scrutinize him once more next year."
